Vor 250 Millionen Jahren war ganz Mitteleuropa von der Tethys bedeckt. Bis heute kann man die ehemaligen Bewohner dieses Urmeeres als Fossilien des Muschelkalks im Hainich finden. In Kalkstein eindringendes Regenwasser löst den Kalk heraus und lässt Klüfte im Untergrund entstehen. Stürzt solch ein Hohlraum ein, entsteht an der Oberfläche eine Senke, ein Erdfall. In Karstgebieten wie dem Hainich herrscht Wassermangel, da das Oberflächenwasser schnell im Boden versickert. So hielt auch Wassermangel die Menschen früher davon ab, dauerhaft im Hainich zu siedeln. Geologische und kulturelle Aspekte haben dazu beigetragen, dass der Hainich heute ein großes, unzerschnittenes Waldgebiet ist – ein UNESCO-Welterbe.
250 million years ago, all of Central Europe was covered by the Tethys. To this day, the former inhabitants of this primordial sea can be found as fossils of the shell limestone in the Hainich. Rainwater penetrating limestone dissolves out the limestone and creates fissures in the subsoil. If such a cavity collapses, a depression, a sinkhole, is formed on the surface. In karst areas like the Hainich, there is a shortage of water because surface water quickly seeps into the ground. Thus, lack of water also kept people from settling permanently in the Hainich in the past. Geological and cultural aspects have contributed to the fact that the Hainich is now a large, undissected forest area - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
