Au cours de ses presque 1200 ans d'histoire, Rohr a acquis une importance exceptionnelle à plusieurs égards, ce qui s'explique notamment par sa situation géographique avantageuse. Au Moyen Âge, le village se trouvait sur l'importante route commerciale qui menait de Mainfranken à la forêt de Thuringe en passant par Mellrichstadt, Jüchsen à "Salzfurt", Einhausen à "Werrafurt", par le "Zeller-Leube". La commune de Rohr possède l'une des églises fortifiées les plus intéressantes de Thuringe, la Michaeliskirche. Elle a été construite comme église de monastère bénédictin entre 815 et 820. Lorsque le monastère s'est effondré vers 900, il a continué à servir d'église palatine du palatinat royal, qui a existé jusqu'au début du 11e siècle. Ce n'est qu'après la Réforme que l'église St Michael est devenue une église de village, comme c'est encore le cas aujourd'hui. Malgré les changements structurels, la nef avec la crypte est le seul bâtiment monumental d'Allemagne orientale qui date en grande partie de l'époque carolingienne. Le petit village de Rohr, en Thuringe, possède donc un trésor architectural d'importance nationale et internationale. Un couvent bénédictin (1150) est également intéressant. Cependant, seuls les vestiges de l'ancien mur du monastère et le bâtiment de l'église Saint-Jean sont encore visibles dans l'actuel quartier "Kloster Rohr". Parmi les trésors du centre du village, on trouve de nombreuses maisons dans le style à colombages de Henneberg, qui se caractérise par des poutres courbes et des doubles entretoises. Dans le village bas, les visiteurs trouveront le plus bel ensemble à colombages avec puits et grange.

In its almost 1200-year history, Rohr has gained outstanding importance in several respects, which is not least explained by its convenient location. In the Middle Ages, the village was situated on the important trade route which led from Mainfranken via Mellrichstadt, Jüchsen at the "Salzfurt", Einhausen at the "Werrafurt", over the "Zeller-Leube" into the Thuringian Forest. The municipality of Rohr has one of the most interesting church fortifications in Thuringia, the Michaeliskirche. It was built as a Benedictine monastery church between 815 and 820. When the monastery collapsed around 900, it continued to serve as the palatine church of the royal palatinate, which existed until the beginning of the 11th century. Only in post-Reformation times did St Michael's Church become a village church, as it still is today. Despite the structural changes, the nave with the crypt is the only monumental building in eastern Germany that largely dates from the Carolingian period. Thus the small village of Rohr in Thuringia possesses an architectural historical treasure of national and international importance. Interesting is also a Benedictine nunnery (1150). However, only the remains of the former convent wall and the building of St. John's Church can still be seen of this early Gothic convent complex in today's "Kloster Rohr" district. Among the treasures of the village centre are many houses in the Henneberg half-timbered style, which is characterised by curved timbers and double struts. In the lower village the visitor finds the most beautiful half-timbered ensemble with well and barn.

Rohr hat in seiner fast 1200-Jährigen Geschichte in mehrfacher Hinsicht herausragende Bedeutung erlangt, die sich nicht zuletzt aus der verkehrsgünstigen Lage erklärt. Das Dorf lag im Mittelalter an der wichtigen Handelsstraße, die von Mainfranken über Mellrichstadt, Jüchsen an der "Salzfurt", Einhausen an der "Werrafurt", über die "Zeller-Leube" in den Thüringer Wald führte. Die Gemeinde Rohr besitzt mit der Michaeliskirche eine der interessantesten Kirchburganlagen in Thüringen. Sie wurde als Benediktinerklosterkirche in den Jahren zwischen 815 und 820 erbaut. Als das Kloster um 900 einging, diente sie weiter als Pfalzkirche der königlichen Pfalz, die bis zu Beginn des 11. Jahrhunderts bestand. Erst in nachreformatorischer Zeit wurde die Michaeliskirche zur Dorfkirche, wie sie noch heute vorgefunden wird. Trotz der baulichen Veränderungen ist das Kirchenschiff mit der Krypta der einzige Monumentalbau im östlichen Deutschland, der weitgehend aus karolingischer Zeit stammt. Damit besitzt der kleine Ort Rohr in Thüringen eine architekturgeschichtliche Kostbarkeit von nationaler und internationaler Bedeutung. Interessant ist auch ein Benediktiner-Nonnenkloster (1150). Jedoch sind im heutigen Ortsteil "Kloster Rohr" von dieser frühgotischen Klosteranlage nur noch die Reste der ehemaligen Klostermauer sowie das Gebäude der Johanniskirche zu sehen. Zu den Kostbarkeiten des Dorfkernes gehören viele Häuser im Henneberger Fachwerkstil, der sich durch gekrümmte Hölzer und Doppelstreben auszeichnet. Im Unterdorf findet der Besucher das schönste Fachwerkensemble mit Brunnen und Stadel vor.
