The artist Lyonel Feininger was known, among other things, for his fondness for villages and their architecture in the Weimar region - he usually explored them alone on his bicycle. He was particularly taken with the church in Gelmeroda, which has become famous thanks to the numerous paintings by the German-American. In 1999, a light sculpture was installed that recreates the church after dark with the different colors of Feininger's paintings and serves as a "permanent exhibition" in memory of the Bauhaus master.
Der Künstler Lyonel Feininger war unter anderem bekannt für seine Vorliebe für Dörfer und deren Architektur im Weimarer Umland – diese erschloss er sich zumeist allein auf dem Fahrrad. Besonders hatte es ihm die Kirche in Gelmeroda angetan, die es dank der zahlreichen Gemälde des Deutsch-Amerikaners zur Berühmtheit geschafft hat. Im Jahr 1999 wurde eine Lichtskulptur installiert, welche die Kirche nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit mit den verschiedenen Farben der Feininger-Gemälde nachstellt und als „ständige Ausstellung“ an den Bauhaus-Meister erinnert.
