In the middle of Frauenplan, in the heart of Weimar's old town, a quiet, almost intimate garden space is hidden behind the prestigious façade of Goethe's residence. Barely visible from the street, it unfolds inside as a sheltered place between architecture and nature – a green counterpart to the poet's living and working spaces. The garden served Johann Wolfgang von Goethe not only as a place of relaxation, but also as a field of experimentation for his scientific interests. Goethe was intensely involved in botany, color theory, and morphology – the direct observation of plants was part of his scientific self-image. The garden was thus a place of retreat, a source of inspiration, and a place of research all at once. In terms of design, the garden is a bourgeois house garden with a clear structure: paths, flower beds, and green areas form a harmonious ensemble. The rather restrained design emphasizes the private character of the place. It creates an atmosphere of concentration – far from courtly splendor, close to everyday life. Today, the garden invites visitors to take a step behind the scenes of Weimar Classicism. Between historic walls and living greenery, it becomes clear how closely poetry, science, and nature observation were intertwined in Goethe's life. The garden at the Goethe House is thus more than a historical detail—it is a quiet resonance chamber for thoughts that continue to shape Weimar to this day.
