The Schafstein is a 832 meter high basalt cone that belongs to the Wasserkuppen massif. The mighty basalt block seas that characterize the northern and southern slopes are among the most impressive in all of Central Europe. On the northern edge there is a magnificent view towards Milseburg, on the southern edge you can see far into the Ulstertal. Together with the old, natural trees on the summit plateau, the Schafstein is a habitat for rare species and is an outstanding nature reserve of 127 hectares. Of these, 77 hectares are designated as the "core zone" of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve at an altitude of 700 to 800 meters. In 1992, forest management around the Schafstein was discontinued. Some of the trees were up to 140 years old at this point. Now the character of the forest is jungle-like. Rare mosses, lichens and plants can be found here. The dead trees and the lying dead wood are welcome homes for many insects and cave breeders.
