Liebstedt is a district of the rural community of Ilmtal-Weinstraße in the north-east of the Weimarer Land district. The village is located in the south-east of the Thuringian Basin, in a shallow valley of the Little Ettersberg, in the triangle of the towns of Weimar, Apolda and Buttstädt. A place called "Liuprehtestat" was first mentioned in the annals of the Fulda monastery in 876. However, it has not been established whether this is the local Liebstedt. The first documentary mention of Liebstedt was in a document of Otto I from 956, which stated: "King Otto I donates his property in Liebstedt and Oßmannstedt in Thuringia in the county of Willihelms, including serfs and other accessories, to the Servatius monastery in Quedlinburg for his daughter Mathilde. Liebstedt remained the property of Quedlinburg Abbey until 1300. It passed to the Pforta monastery on the Saale with 26 hooves of 40 acres each. Just four years later, the monastery transferred the village to Hersfeld Monastery in exchange for Lißdorf. The lords "von Liebstedt" appear in history for the first time. After the knightly family died out, the Counts of Orlamünde-Weimar, the Counts of Beichlingen and the Margraves of Meissen and Landgraves of Thuringia followed as owners and lords of Liebstedt. Margrave Frederick II of Meissen issued a document at Wartburg Castle on October 1, 1331: "Margrave Frederick of Meissen exchanges the village and fortress of Liebstedt with church fief and all accessories to the Teutonic Knights for the fortress of Wallhausen belonging to the Order". As further proof of this important event, there is still a stone at the Kommendegasthof with the year 1331 and the coat of arms of the Teutonic Knights. Until 1809, the year the Order was dissolved by Napoleon I, the Order of Knights controlled the fortunes of Liebstedt for almost 480 years. Liebstedt and the Order's castle fell to the Kingdom of Saxony. Prussia, which became the owner of the village after the Wars of Independence (Congress of Vienna), ceded it to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar in 1815. When the state of Thuringia was founded in 1920, Liebstedt became a state estate. Neighbouring Goldbach was incorporated on 14 March 1974. On December 31, 2013, Liebstedt merged with other municipalities to form the municipality of Ilmtal-Weinstraße.
