Großbodungen extends in the charming valley of the small river Bode. In the northern part of the district, which has altitudes between 250 and 400 m above sea level, there are extensive mixed forests. To the south of the village there are two small woods. Since 1461 the village was an administrative district and housed the district court until 1933. Großbodungen was granted the right to hold markets, and three car and livestock markets were held annually. The direct location on the trade route Nordhausen - Duderstadt - Göttingen favored the economic development of the community. Since the reunification period, after Großbodungen was again recognized as a market town, goods markets with merchants from all over Thuringia have been held regularly. The village center is characterized by several historical buildings. The small village of Wallrode spreads out to the south directly at the foot of the Hasenburg, which rises steeply as a mighty rock massif that is partly forested between the slopes. Extensive excavation finds were made in this area, dating back to the Bronze Age.
