A historical film about the fate of the Protestant clergyman and peasant leader Thomas Müntzer, made with immense external effort as an "actual national film work" (Hellberg) on the occasion of the GDR's tenth anniversary celebrations. Müntzer, who derived his "original communist" declaration of war from the Gospel, was one of the key figures of the Reformation in the Peasants' War and as such the ideological opponent of Catholicism, but also of the Lutherans who represented the interests of the German princes. The DEFA production portrays Müntzer as a visionary of a "new world order" who ultimately only fails due to the sabotage of the nobility. The film thus appears superficial and tendentious in its interpretation of history; despite elaborate crowd scenes, it also remains anemic in terms of staging. - From 16th film service The film was shot in Frankenhausen with numerous extras from the town and the surrounding area. Film historique sur le destin de l'ecclésiastique protestant et leader paysan Thomas Müntzer, réalisé avec un énorme effort extérieur comme "véritable œuvre cinématographique nationale" (Hellberg) à l'occasion des dix ans de la RDA. Müntzer, qui tirait de l'Evangile sa déclaration de guerre "communiste originelle", était l'une des figures clés de la Réforme pendant la guerre des paysans et, en tant que tel, l'adversaire idéologique du catholicisme, mais aussi des luthériens représentant les intérêts des princes allemands. La production DEFA décrit Müntzer comme un visionnaire d'un "nouvel ordre mondial" qui n'échoue finalement que par le sabotage de la noblesse. Müntzer, der aus dem Evangelium seine "urkommunistische" Kampfansage ableitete, war im Bauernkrieg eine der Schlüsselfiguren der Reformation und als solcher der ideologische Widerpart des Katholizismus, aber auch der die Interessen der deutschen Fürsten vertretenden Lutheraner. Die DEFA-Produktion verzeichnet Müntzer als Visionär einer "neuen Weltordnung", der letztlich nur an der Sabotage des Adels scheitert. So wirkt der Film in seiner Geschichtsinterpretation oberflächlich und tendenziös; auch inszenatorisch bleibt er trotz aufwendiger Massenszenen blutleer. - Ab 16.
