Anhand eines umfangreichen Bildarchivs wird die über 100-jährige Beziehung zwischen der Eisenbahn und der Stadt Meiningen veranschaulicht. Darüber hinaus gewährt die Ausstellung Einblicke in die Arbeit des benachbarten Dampflokwerkes und lässt durch Exponate und Zeitzeugeninterviews sowohl historische als auch aktuelle Akteure zu Wort kommen. Auf zusätzlichen 300 m² bieten Sonderausstellungen thematische Erweiterungen und vertiefen das inhaltliche Angebot. Eine einzigartige Methode zur Erklärung der Dampflokomotiven-Funktionalität bietet eine dreigeteilte Lok entlang der Längsachse. Besucher können durch die Exponat-Teile hindurchlaufen und so die Lokomotive von innen erkunden. Der Führerstand ist begehbar, und interaktive Medienstationen verdeutlichen, wie Feuer, Kohle, Wasser und Dampf die Lok in Bewegung setzen. Die Dampflok Erlebniswelt ist einzigartig gelegen in einem Gebäude des ehemaligen Reichsbahnausbesserungswerkes Meiningen, unmittelbar neben einem Werk der DB-Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH. Der Standort Meiningen beherbergt das letzte große, vollumfängliche Werk für die Aufarbeitung, Reparatur und den Neubau von Dampflokomotiven in Westeuropa, welches im Rahmen von Führungen besichtigt werden kann. Zahlreiche Exponate, darunter historische Werkzeuge und originale Bauteile von Dampflokomotiven, ermöglichen den Besuchern, die Geschichte der Eisenbahn hautnah zu erleben. Zeitzeugeninterviews bieten zudem spannende Einblicke in den Arbeitsalltag der Eisenbahner und vermitteln die Leidenschaft für diese Technik. Zusätzlich zur Dauerausstellung finden auf weiteren 300 m² regelmäßig wechselnde Sonderausstellungen statt, die verschiedene Aspekte der Eisenbahngeschichte beleuchten. The permanent exhibition of the Steam Locomotive World of Experience covers an area of more than 600 m² and allows visitors to experience the operation of the steam locomotive up close at numerous hands-on stations. The Meiningen site is home to the last large, fully comprehensive plant for the reconditioning, repair and new construction of steam locomotives in Western Europe, which can be visited as part of a guided tour.
