Das über 900 Jahre alte Dorf wurde erstmals 1074 urkundlich erwähnt. Weitere Nennungen erfolgten 1385 (die zwei Dörfer) zu Prylip, 1455 Preylip, 1475 Prilans und 1529 Obern Preylip. Der Name leitet sich von dem slawischen Wort Prilep, „Anhängsel“, ab und bezeichnet einen Ort in Nestlage. Vor 1826 gehörte das Dorf zu Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld, dann zum Herzogtum Sachsen-Meiningen. Ab 1920 zählte Oberpreilipp zum Landkreis Saalfeld. Auf eigenen Wunsch kam die Gemeinde ab 1. Juli 1950 zum Landkreis Rudolstadt. Schon immer bestand eine enge Beziehung zum Nachbarort Unterpreilipp. Oberpreilipp war Schulort für beide Dörfer. Auch die 1862 von Grund auf erneuerte Kirche wird von allen Preilippern gemeinsam genutzt. Neben der Landwirtschaft spielte jahrhundertelang der Weinbau eine Rolle für die Bewohner. Noch heute sind in der Flur Spuren der Terrassenbeete, Trockenmauern und manch wildwachsender Rebstock zu finden. Nach seinem Austritt aus der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Uhlstädt gehört Oberpreilipp seit dem 1. Januar 1997 zu Rudolstadt.

Le nom vient du mot slave Prilep, "appendice", et désigne un lieu situé dans un nid. Avant 1826, le village appartenait à la Saxe-Cobourg-Saalfeld, puis au duché de Saxe-Meiningen. À partir de 1920, Oberpreilipp a fait partie du district de Saalfeld. À sa demande, la commune a été rattachée au district de Rudolstadt à partir du 1er juillet 1950. Il y a toujours eu une relation étroite avec le village voisin d'Unterpreilipp. Oberpreilipp était le lieu de scolarisation des deux villages. L'église, entièrement rénovée en 1862, est également utilisée en commun par tous les habitants de Preilipp. Outre l'agriculture, la viticulture a joué un rôle pour les habitants pendant des siècles. Aujourd'hui encore, on trouve dans les champs des traces des parterres en terrasses, des murs en pierres sèches et de nombreux ceps de vigne sauvages. Après avoir quitté la communauté administrative d'Uhlstädt, Oberpreilipp fait partie de Rudolstadt depuis le 1er janvier 1997.

From 1920 onwards Oberpreilipp belonged to the district of Saalfeld. At its own request, the village became part of the district of Rudolstadt on July 1, 1950. There has always been a close relationship with the neighboring village of Unterpreilipp. Oberpreilipp was the school for both villages. The church, which was renovated from the ground up in 1862, is also shared by all Preilipp residents. In addition to agriculture, viticulture played a role for the inhabitants for centuries. Even today, traces of terraced beds, dry stone walls and many a wild vine can be found in the fields. After leaving the administrative community of Uhlstädt, Oberpreilipp has belonged to Rudolstadt since January 1, 1997.
