War es doch Wieland - ein anderer Glücklicher Import - der den großen, aber in Vergessenheit geratenen englischen Dramatiker wieder entdeckte. erst die Übersetzung Von Schlegel und Tieck und Goethes Bühnentätigkeit begründen den Weltruhm Shakespeares. So steht seit 1904 im hiesigen park an der Ilm das älteste und Gleichwohl auch das schönste Denkmal des Dichters. Der britische Schauspieler und Regisseur Shakespeare'scher Königsdramen, Sir Kenneth Branagh, stand in der Pose des Hamlet auf der Bühne des deutschen Nationaltheaters Weimar und sprach an Stelle der wohlbekannten Verse den Satz: „shakespeare is a german writer.“ Welch starke Geste und es bleibt zu hoffen, dass der große Sir Branagh dieses Bekenntnis überlebt hat. Here lives on the spirit of the greatest import of German intellectual history—William Shakespeare (1564–1616). It was Wieland—another fortunate import—who rediscovered the great but long-forgotten English playwright. It was the translations by Schlegel and Tieck, along with Goethe’s work on the stage, that established Shakespeare’s worldwide fame. Thus, since 1904, the oldest and, indeed, the most beautiful monument to the poet has stood in the local park on the Ilm. The British actor and director of Shakespeare’s royal dramas, Sir Kenneth Branagh, stood in the pose of Hamlet on the stage of the German National Theater in Weimar and, instead of the well-known verses, uttered the sentence: “Shakespeare is a German writer.” What a powerful gesture, and we can only hope that the great Sir Branagh has survived this declaration.
