The History of a Franconian District Winery Today’s Fladungen Town Hall is one of the last fully preserved district wine cellars in Bavaria and looks back on over 400 years of history. As early as 1579, the seat of the Fladungen district administrator was moved from Hildenburg to the town. The Tann House, acquired in 1589, initially served as a wine cellar; preserved hewn stone blocks in the vaulted cellar still bear witness to the earliest construction phase. In 1601, the district winery building was constructed on the same site. Here, monetary and in-kind taxes were collected, administered, and stored. The three stories served as storage for grain, flax, and other crops. Between 1628 and 1630, the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg, had the imposing two-winged administrative building constructed. Its size underscored the claim to power of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg at the northernmost border of its territory. The market was held in the ground floor of the main wing, while taxes in kind were collected in the courtyard of the side wing. In 1635, Fladungen was almost completely destroyed in a major fire. Only the massive stone cellar building and parts of the city wall survived. The administrative building was rebuilt in 1650. Until 1826, the building served as a tax office and district court. After the dissolution of the administrative offices, the property remained in the possession of the town of Fladungen, as no buyer could be found. Starting in 1870, the building was used as a school. Later, it housed, among other things, the forestry office, teachers’ and poor people’s apartments, a maintenance yard, and, until the late 1960s, a cold storage facility. From the 1970s until 1990, the police station was also located here. The town’s actual town hall was originally located in the former post office building with its bell tower. As early as 1921, the newly founded Rhön Museum in Fladungen was given the side wing of the historic administrative building. During World War II, the relocated Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Silicate Research used parts of the building; at the same time, rooms were used for residential purposes. After the war ended, the Rhön Museum took over the entire south wing. In the 1970s, the Fladungen Administrative Community was established, featuring a meeting hall, a guest house, and an event space in the basement level, known as the “Millionenkeller.” A comprehensive renovation took place in 2011. During this process, the historic building structure and modern elements were carefully integrated, and accessibility was improved. Since March 2025, the reoriented Rhön Museum and the Fladungen Tourist Information Office have been located in the main wing, while the administrative association uses the side wing. Today, the historic complex brings together administration, museum, and local history under one roof.
