Die Bergrettung Struth-Helmershof betreibt unweit des Rennsteigs die Hütten am Sperrhügel. Die Region um die Wiedepfuhlwiese ist eine der beliebtesten Ausflugsziele in der Schmalkalder Gegend. Außerdem ist es möglich auf der Hütte zu übernachten. Dabei lautet das Motto: "Natur pur" Mitten in der Natur ist natürlich auch kein Stromanschluss vorhanden. Notstromaggregate dürfen nicht betrieben werden. Gekocht und geheizt wird mit Holz. Die Wasserversorgung wird genauso natürlich über ein etwa 50 m entfernte Quelle sichergestellt. Tipp: Ein echtes Highlight ist das jährlich stattfindende Pfingstfest mit mehreren tausend Besuchern.
