Als wichtiges Wahrzeichen der Stadt, ist das Staatstheater Meiningen über die Landesgrenzen hinaus bekannt. Das Vierspartenhaus wurde 2011 generalsaniert und bleibt bis heute den reichen Traditionslinien des Herzog Georg II von Sachsen-Meiningen treu. Mit rund 550 Aufführungen begeistert das Ensemble ca. 160.000 Zuschauer pro Spielzeit. Herzog Georg II, auch "Theaterherzog" genannt, schrieb mit seinem Meininger Schauspielensemble im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert Theatergeschichte. Dabei ließ er damals historisierende Inszenierungen als Gesamtkunstwerke einstudieren und schickte seine Schauspieltruppe auf Gastspielreisen durch Europa. Sein Hauptanliegen war es, die verschiedensten Elemente des Schauspiels zu einem detailgetreuen und wirklichkeitsnahen Gesamtkunstwerk zu vereinen. Die sogenannten "Meininger" revolutionierten die Theaterwelt mit aufsehenerregenden Inszenierungen und einer Spielweise, die heute zu den Grundlagen des Erfolgs der Filmfabrik Hollywood zählt. Nach dem Vorbild der "Meininger" wurde schließlich auch die Royal Shakespeare-Company gegründet.

As an important landmark of the city, the State Theatre Meiningen is known beyond the state borders. The four-section house was completely renovated in 2011 and remains true to the rich tradition of Duke George II of Saxony-Meiningen to this day. With around 550 performances, the ensemble delights approximately 160,000 spectators per season. Duke Georg II, also known as the "Theatre Duke", wrote theatre history with his Meiningen acting ensemble at the end of the 19th century. At that time he had historicizing productions rehearsed as complete works of art and sent his acting troupe on guest performance tours through Europe. His main concern was to unite the most diverse elements of the play into a detailed and realistic synthesis of the arts. The so-called "Meininger" revolutionized the theater world with sensational productions and a style of acting that is today one of the foundations of the success of the Hollywood film factory. The Royal Shakespeare Company was also founded on the model of the "Meininger".
