Während seiner rund 40-jährigen Regierungszeit bewahrte er die starke Stellung seines Herzogtums als eines der bestverwalteten und militärisch leistungsfähigsten unter den thüringischen Kleinstaaten, gestützt vor allem auf seine fähigen Beamten.
