The scion of a Hessian dynasty of artists contributed significantly to the public's perception of Goethe. Study trips to the Netherlands and Italy gave him valuable impulses for portrait, landscape and history paintings. Goethe negotiated an annual allowance for Tischbein with Duke Ernst II of Gotha-Altenburg. He became a travelling companion of the poet prince, but soon accepted the post of director at the Academy of Arts in Naples. Various breaches of duty towards the sovereigns as well as a diverging understanding of art snubbed Goethe - it came to a falling out. Tischbein's works combine classicist aesthetics and romantic influences: the painting Goethe in the Campagna gave him the nickname "Goethe-Tischbein". With the invasion of the French troops he lost his position as director and returned to Germany, where he held posts in Göttingen and Eutin. He was also active as a writer, but many of his works were only published posthumously.
