In Altenburg - the second Thuringian residence of the Wettin electors besides Weimar - Luther often stayed. He lodged at the house of his friend, the elector's private secretary and canon of the Georg monastery, Georg Spalatin. In 1519, Luther met the legate of Pope Karl von Miltitz and negotiated the "Altenburg Silence Agreement" as a last attempt at an amicable solution. Miltitz was to find out whether Luther still adhered to his Wittenberg theses. However, the resulting silence agreement did not last long. From 1528, Spalatin took over the superintendency and administratively implemented Luther's Reformation according to his ideas. Occasionally, Spalatin also prevented conflicts caused by Luther's impulsive attitude, especially between the reformer and the Saxon elector Friedrich the Wise. "If I had not been, it would never have come so far with Luther and his teaching." Stations on the way to Schmölln include the village church in Mockern, dedicated to Saint George, and the Saara church with a very unusual clock: instead of numbers, the clock face bears the inscription "Make good use of time." In the quaint village of Maltis, a visit to the medieval Saara church is worthwhile. The destination of the route is Schmölln with one of the largest market squares in Central Germany. Worth seeing are the town hall with a seating niche portal at the entrance, an outdoor staircase, and curtain arch windows. The crossed swords attached to the front of the town hall point to its former right of jurisdiction. The town is surrounded by a city wall up to eight meters high. In 1127, Bruno, "Count in Pleißen", initiated the construction of a second monastery belonging to the Cistercian order on the Pfefferberg in Schmölln, which was relocated to Pforta in 1138/40. The remaining St. Mary's Church gained great significance as a German Marian pilgrimage site from the 13th to the 16th century. The church was destroyed by insurgents in the Peasants' War of 1525. Four years later, the Reformation was introduced. Around 1900, the town developed into the center of the button industry. The mother-of-pearl button turner Hermann Donath laid the foundation for the Schmölln button industry. Today, the button and regional museum offers a comprehensive overview of the varied history of the Schmölln button industry.

À Altenburg - la deuxième résidence thuringienne des électeurs de Wettin après Weimar - Luther a souvent séjourné. Il logeait dans la maison de son ami, le secrétaire privé de l'électeur et chanoine de la collégiale Saint-Georges, Georg Spalatin. En 1519, Luther rencontra le légat du pape Karl von Miltitz et négocia le "pacte de silence d'Altenburg" comme dernière tentative d'un accord à l'amiable. Miltitz devait déterminer si Luther maintenait ses thèses de Wittenberg. Cependant, le pacte de silence conclu n'a pas duré longtemps. Spalatin prit la superintendance à partir de 1528 et administra la Réforme de Luther selon ses idées. Parfois, Spalatin évitait aussi les conflits provoqués par l'attitude impulsive de Luther, notamment entre le réformateur et l'électeur saxon Frédéric le Sage. "Si je n'avais pas été là, Luther et son enseignement ne seraient jamais allés aussi loin". Les étapes sur le chemin vers Schmölln sont l'église du village à Mockern, dédiée à Saint Georges, et l'église-halle à Saara avec une horloge tout à fait particulière : à la place des chiffres, le cadran porte l'inscription "Profite du temps". Dans la paisible localité de Maltis, une visite de l'église-halle médiévale vaut le détour. La destination du parcours est Schmölln avec l'une des plus grandes places de marché d'Allemagne centrale. À voir : l'hôtel de ville avec un portail à niches d'assise à l'entrée, un escalier extérieur et des fenêtres en arc de rideau. Les épées croisées fixées à la façade de la mairie rappellent l'ancien droit de juridiction. La ville est entourée d'un mur d'enceinte pouvant atteindre 8 mètres de hauteur. En 1127, Bruno, "comte en Pleißen", ordonna la construction d'un second monastère cistercien sur la colline de Pfefferberg à Schmölln, transféré à Pforta en 1138/40. L'église Marie, toujours existante, prit une grande importance entre le XIIIe et le XVIe siècle comme lieu de pèlerinage marial en Allemagne. L'église fut détruite par des insurgés lors de la guerre des paysans en 1525. La Réforme y fut introduite quatre ans plus tard. Vers 1900, la ville devint un centre de l'industrie du bouton. Hermann Donath, tourneur sur nacre, posa la pierre angulaire de l'industrie du bouton de Schmölln. Aujourd'hui, le musée du bouton et régional offre un aperçu complet de l'histoire mouvementée de cette industrie.

In Altenburg - der neben Weimar zweiten Thüringer Residenz der Wettiner Kurfürsten - weilte Luther oft. Quartier nahm er im Haus seines Freundes, des Geheimsekretärs des Kurfürsten und Domherrn des Georgenstiftes, Georg Spalatin. 1519 traf Luther den Legaten des Papstes Karl v. Miltitz und verhandelte das "Altenburger Schweigeabkommen" als letzten Versuch einer gütlichen Einigung. Miltitz sollte herausfinden, ob Luther weiterhin auf seinen Wittenberger Thesen beharre. Das im Ergebnis zustande gekommene Schweigeabkommen hielt jedoch nicht lange. Spalatin übernahm ab 1528 die Superintendentur und setzte Luthers Reformation nach seinen Vorstellungen administrativ um. Mitunter verhinderte Spalatin auch durch Luthers impulsive Haltung heraufbeschworene Konflikte, vor allem zwischen dem Reformator und dem sächsischen Kurfürsten Friedrich dem Weisen. "Wenn ich nicht gewesen wäre, nimmer wäre es mit Luthero und seiner Lehr so weit kommen". Stationen auf dem Weg nach Schmölln sind die Dorfkirche in Mockern, dem Heiligen Georg geweiht, und die Saalkirche in Saara mit einer ganz außergewöhnlichen Uhr: Anstelle der Ziffern steht auf dem Uhrblatt der Spruch "Nütze die Zeit".  Im beschaulichen Ort Maltis lohnt ein Besuch der Mittelalterlichen Saalkirche. Ziel der Route ist Schmölln mit einem der größten Marktanlagen Mitteldeutschlands. Sehenswert sind das Rathaus mit Sitznischenportal im Eingangsbereich, einer Freitreppe und Vorhangbogenfenster. Die an der Vorderseite des Rathauses angebrachten gekreuzten Schwerter weisen auf das einstige Recht der Gerichtsbarkeit hin. Umgeben ist die Stadt von einer bis zu 8 Meter hohen Stadtmauer. 1127 veranlasst Bruno, "Graf in Pleißen" den Bau eines zweiten, dem Zisterzienserorden zugehörigen Klosters auf dem Pfefferberg in Schmölln, das 1138/40 nach Pforta verlegt wird. Die weiter bestehende Marienkirche erlangt ab dem 13. Jahrhundert bis zum 16. Jahrhundert vor allem Bedeutung als deutscher Marienwallfahrtsort. Die Marienkirche wird im Bauernkrieg 1525 durch Aufständische zerstört. Vier Jahre später erfolgt die Einführung der Reformation. Um 1900 entwickelt sich die Stadt zum Zentrum der Knopfindustrie. Der Perlmuttknopfdrechsler Hermann Donath war es, der den Grundstein für die Schmöllner Knopfindustrie legte. Heute erhält man im Knopf- und Regionalmuseum einen umfangreichen Überblick über die wechselvolle Geschichte der Schmöllner Knopfindustrie.
