Luther kam häufig nach Altenburg, ob zu Besuch bei Georg Spalatin, auf der Durchreise nach Leipzig und Zeitz oder auf dem Weg nach Coburg. Schon 1522 wandten sich die Bürger Altenburgs an den Kurfürsten Friedrich III. von Sachsen mit der Bitte um einen evangelischen Pfarrer. 1525 wurde Georg Spalatin Pfarrer an der Stadtkirche Bartholomäi, heute die älteste Kirche Altenburgs und steinerner Zeuge der Reformation. Georg Burkhardt, der sich später nach seiner Geburtsstadt Spalt (Franken) in Spalatin umbenannte, war der Mann neben Luther. Während Luther die reformatorischen Gedanken predigte, sorgte Spalatin für die Umsetzung im Alltag. Spalatin agierte als Mittelsmann zwischen dem Kurfürsten und Luther und sorgte immer wieder durch geschickte Diplomatie dafür, dass sein Freund Luther nicht an den Papst und Kaiser ausgeliefert wurde. Luthers Ururenkel starb 1677 in Altenburg und liegt an der Brüderkirche begraben. Burg Gnandstein war bis 1945 im Besitz der Familie von Einsiedel. Sie gehörte zu den ersten sächsischen Adelsfamilien, die sich offen zum lutherisch-reformatorischen Gedankengut bekannten. Ein intensiver Briefwechsel mit Martin Luther, Georg Spalatin und weiteren Mitstreitern ist bekannt. Martin Luther bezeichnete die von Einsiedels als "... ein seltenes und einzigartiges Licht im Dunkel jenes verworrenen Adels dieses Jahrhunderts." In der spätgotischen Kapelle der Burg zeugt die Darstellung des predigenden Luther von diesen Ereignissen.

Luther frequently came to Altenburg, whether visiting Georg Spalatin, passing through to Leipzig and Zeitz, or on the way to Coburg. As early as 1522, the citizens of Altenburg petitioned Elector Friedrich III of Saxony for a Protestant pastor. In 1525, Georg Spalatin became pastor at the Bartholomäi parish church, today Altenburg’s oldest church and a stone witness of the Reformation. Georg Burkhardt, who later adopted the name Spalatin after his birthplace Spalt (Franconia), was the man beside Luther. While Luther preached reformatory ideas, Spalatin was responsible for their practical implementation. Spalatin acted as intermediary between the elector and Luther and repeatedly ensured through skillful diplomacy that his friend Luther was not handed over to the pope and emperor. Luther’s great-great-grandson died in Altenburg in 1677 and is buried at the Brüderkirche. Gnandstein Castle was owned by the von Einsiedel family until 1945. They were among the first Saxon noble families to openly embrace Lutheran-Reformation ideas. A substantial correspondence with Martin Luther, Georg Spalatin, and other associates is known. Martin Luther described the von Einsiedels as "... a rare and unique light in the darkness of that confused nobility of this century." In the late Gothic chapel of the castle, the depiction of Luther preaching bears witness to these events.
