Darunter befinden sich die Pfarrkirche St. Lorenz, die Kirche St. Michael, das ehemalige Franziskanerkloster und das ehemalige Klarissenkloster. Als mit dem Tod Ottos VII. das Haus Andechs-Meranien 1248 im Mannesstamm erlosch, schrieb sich Heinrich VI. von Weida (1238-1254) als Erbe seiner Großmutter Bertha von Vohburg, der Gemahlin Heinrichs II. “des Reichen” (1193-1209), die Reichsvogtei über das Regnitzlandzu. Das war ein Coup! Sichtbarer Ausdruck der Weidaer Herrschaft wurde die planmäßige Anlage der ummauerten Neustadt (vor 1260). Stadt und Region nahmen unter den Vögten einen Aufschwung, der 1318 durch die Übernahme der Burggrafen von Nürnberg, denen die Vögte den Lehenseid leisten mussten, nicht gebremst wurde.

The city and region prospered under the Vögte, a development that was not slowed by the takeover in 1318 by the burgraves of Nuremberg, to whom the Vögte had to swear an oath of fealty.
