Depuis le 31 octobre 2015, Gera relie le chemin de Luther de la région centrale allemande entre Weida et Ronneburg. Randonneurs, pèlerins et promeneurs profitent de ce chemin paysager, varié à travers ville et campagne, bordé de 12 panneaux d'information, depuis la nouvelle aire de repos près du tilleul de Luther et la croix de la Réforme haute de 4 mètres. Le chemin de Luther, marqué par le symbole « L », traverse Gera en un large arc. Il croise à deux reprises la Weiße Elster, dans la vallée de laquelle la ville est située. Au cours de la route, randonneurs, pèlerins et promeneurs sont guidés notamment vers des lieux historiquement importants de Gera. Une attention particulière a été portée aux endroits liés à la Réforme et à sa mise en œuvre, ou qui y font référence. De plus, un parcours paysager beau et facilement praticable a été choisi. Le sentier circulaire "Katharinas Spange" permet une randonnée d'environ 26 km à travers Gera sur les traces historiques. Ceux qui souhaitent prolonger leur parcours peuvent continuer sur le chemin de Luther vers le sud, en direction de Wünschendorf, ou vers l'est, en direction de Ronneburg. Le sentier circulaire du chemin de Luther a été nommé d'après l'épouse de Luther, Katharina von Bora. Née en 1499 dans une famille noble de province, elle fut envoyée adolescente pour son éducation dans un couvent de bénédictines. Plus tard, elle rejoignit le couvent cistercien Marienthron à Nimbschen, où elle fit vœu de nonne en 1515. Quelques années plus tard, les enseignements de Luther et sa critique de la vie monastique furent entendus aussi par les nonnes. Katharina décida alors, avec quelques compagnes, de fuir. Leur fuite fut soutenue par Martin Luther, qui les accompagna aussi à Wittenberg. Après plusieurs tentatives infructueuses avec d’autres possibles époux, Luther et Katharina décidèrent de se marier. Les Luther vécurent dans l'ancien couvent augustinien de la ville de Luther, Wittenberg, dont la gestion fut en grande partie prise en charge par Katharina. En plus de cette gestion, elle élevait du bétail, dirigeait une brasserie et exploitait les nombreuses terres agricoles. Les enseignements de Luther attirèrent ici nombreux étudiants et visiteurs, tous accueillis par Katharina. Au cours de leurs 20 années de mariage, elle eut six enfants. Après la mort de son mari, Katharina se retrouva en difficulté financière. Luther désigna Katharina comme unique héritière et tutrice des enfants dans son testament. Cette volonté exceptionnelle contredisait alors la loi qui exigeait la nomination d’un tuteur pour la veuve survivante. Le testament fut contesté, et la famille perdit des sources de revenus importantes. À l’été 1552, Katharina s’enfuit avec sa fille Margarete pour échapper à la peste et quitta Wittenberg. Sur le chemin vers Torgau, Katharina fut blessée dans un accident. Elle mourut des suites de ses blessures le 20 décembre 1552 et fut enterrée dans l’église Sainte-Marie de Torgau.

Since October 31, 2015, Gera has connected the Central German Luther path between Weida and Ronneburg. Hikers, pilgrims, and walkers enjoy the scenic route through city and countryside, lined with 12 information boards, from the new rest area at the Luther Linden Tree and the 4-meter-high Reformation Cross. The Luther path marked with the symbol "L" crosses Gera in a wide arc. It crosses the White Elster river twice, in whose valley the city lies. Along the way, hikers and pilgrims, as well as walkers, are guided especially to historically important places of Gera. Emphasis was placed on locations connected to the Reformation and its implementation or related to it. A scenic and easy-to-walk route was also selected. The circular hiking trail "Katharina's Spange" allows an approximately 26 km long hike through Gera on historical tracks. Those who want to extend the path can continue the Luther path further south towards Wünschendorf or further east towards Ronneburg. The circular route on the Luther path is named after Luther's wife Katharina von Bora. She was born in 1499 as the daughter of a noble family and was sent to a Benedictine convent for education as a young girl. Later, she joined the Cistercian monastery Marienthron in Nimbschen, where she took her monastic vows in 1515. Some years later, as Luther's teachings and his criticism of monastic life reached the nuns, Katharina decided to flee with some of her fellow nuns. They were supported in their escape by Martin Luther, who also assisted them in Wittenberg. After attempts with other possible spouses failed, Luther and Katharina decided on marriage. The Luthers lived in the former Augustinian monastery in the Luther city of Wittenberg, whose management was largely taken over by Katharina, the Lutherin. Besides administration, she operated livestock breeding and a brewery and managed the extensive lands. Luther's teachings attracted many students and guests, whom Katharina cared for. During their 20-year marriage, she bore six children. After her husband's death, Katharina faced financial hardship. Luther appointed Katharina as sole heir and guardian for their children in his will. This extraordinary last will contradicted the law at the time that required a guardian to be appointed for the surviving wife. The will was contested, and the family lost important sources of income. In summer 1552, Katharina fled with her daughter Margarete from the plague and left Wittenberg. On the way to Torgau, Katharina was injured in an accident. She died on December 20, 1552, from the consequences of the accident and was buried in the Torgau St. Mary's Church.

Seit 31. Oktober 2015 verbindet Gera den mitteldeutschen Lutherweg zwischen Weida und Ronneburg. Wanderer, Pilger und Spaziergänger kommen auf dem landschaftlich vielfältigen Weg durch Stadt und Land, gesäumt von 12 Infotafeln, vom neuen Rastplatz an der Lutherlinde und dem 4 Meter hohen Reformationskreuz, auf ihre Kosten. Der mit dem Symbol „L“ markierte Lutherweg durchquert Gera in einem weiten Bogen. Er schneidet dabei zwei Mal die Weiße Elster, in deren Tal die Stadt liegt. Im  Verlauf werden Wanderer und Pilger, aber auch Spaziergänger insbesondere an historisch wichtigen Stellen Geras geführt. Dabei wurde Wert auf Orte gelegt, die mit der Reformation und ihrer Umsetzung im Zusammenhang stehen oder Bezug dazu haben. Zudem wählte man auch eine landschaftlich schöne und gut zu erwandernde Strecke aus.  Der Rundwanderweg "Katharinas Spange" ermöglicht eine ca. 26 km lange Wanderung durch Gera auf historischen Spuren. Wer den Weg verlängern möchte, kann dem Lutherweg weiter nach Süden Richtung Wünschendorf oder weiter nach Osten Richtung Ronneburg folgen.  Benannt wurde der Rundweg am Lutherwanderweg nach Luthers Ehefrau Katharina von Bora. Sie wurde 1499 als Tochter einerLandadels-Familie geboren und als Jugendliche zur Erziehung in das Benediktinerinnenkloster geschickt. Später trat sie dem Zisterzienserinnenkloster Marienthron in Nimbschen bei, wo sie 1515 ihr Gelübde als Nonne ablegte. Als einige Jahre später die Lehren Luthers und seine Kritik am Klosterleben auch zu den Nonnen vordrang, beschloss Katharina mit einigen ihrer Ordensschwestern zu fliehen. Bei ihrer Flucht wurden sie durch Martin Luther unterstützt, der ihnen auch in Wittenberg zur Seite stand. Nachdem Anläufe mit anderen möglichen Ehepartnern gescheitert waren, entschieden sich Luther und Katharina zur gemeinsamen Ehe. Die Luthers lebten im ehemaligen Augustinerkloster in der Lutherstadt Wittenberg, dessen Bewirtschaftung zum großen Teil Katharina, die Lutherin, übernahm. Neben der Verwaltung betrieb sie Viehzucht sowie eine Bierbrauerei und bewirtschaftete die zahlreichen Ländereien. Die Lehren Luthers verfolgten hier zahlreiche Studenten und Gäste, die Katharina versorgte. Im Laufe ihrer 20-jährigen Ehe gebar sie sechs Kinder. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes geriet Katharina in eine wirtschaftliche Notlage. Luther setzte Katharina in seinem Testament als Alleinerbin und Vormund für die gemeinsamen Kinder ein. Dieser außergewöhnliche letzte Wille widersprach damaligem Recht, nach welchem ein Vormund für die überlebende Ehefrau bestellt werden musste. Das Testament wurde angefochten und wichtige Einnahmequellen gingen der Familie verloren. Im Sommer 1552 floh Katharina mit ihrer Tochter Margarete vor der Pest und verließ Wittenberg. Auf dem Weg nach Torgau wurde Katharina bei einem Unfall verletzt. Sie starb am 20. Dezember 1552 an den Folgen des Unfalles und wurde in der Torgauer Marienkirche begraben.
