Der Wanderweg kann von den Parkplätzen "Am Zollgarten" und "Fuchsfarm" aus in ungefähr 3 Stunden erwandert werden. Festes Schuhwerk wird empfohlen, da an manchen Stellen nach feuchtem Wetter vernässte oder auch etwas schlammige Bereiche auftreten können.

Sukzession Sukzession bedeutet im Hainich Entwicklung zum Laubmischwald. Nach Ende der militärischen Nutzung und der Schafbeweidung kann man nun auf den ehemaligen Schießbahnen Sukzession vom dichtfilzigen Gräserstadium mit Disteln, Karden, Wegwarte und Johanniskraut am Wegesrand über das nach und nach dichter werdende Gebüschstadium aus Schlehen und Rosen bis zum Eschen-Jungwald, in dem schon einzelne Buchen wachsen, beobachten. Der Wanderer bewegt sich oberhalb des Saugrabens entlang, bis der Weg nach links durch Eschen-Jungwald über die Triftchaussee in einen strukturreichen Laubmischwald führt.
