Le sentier forestier pédagogique de 1,8 kilomètre de Viernau commence et se termine au portail du parc naturel à Wuhlheide à Viernau. Il ouvre un espace naturel très boisé : la « forêt de grès du sud de Thuringe ». Des processus géologiques ont fracturé ici la grande dalle de grès qui accompagne la forêt de Thuringe au sud. Ainsi, on trouve, sur une très petite surface, outre le grès, des sédiments de calcaire coquillier et de Zechstein. Ce jeu d'alternance de la « zone de faille de Viernau » influence le sol et la végétation. Le climat y change aussi. La proximité des montagnes moyennes apporte plus de précipitations, des températures plus fraîches et donc plus de neige que dans les collines. Cela permet aux arbres de bien se développer dans la forêt de Viernau. La forêt naturelle de chênes et de hêtres a été transformée depuis des siècles par l'homme en grandes plantations d'épicéas et de pins. Celles-ci sont maintenant doucement repoussées, au profit des essences d'arbres naturelles ici présentes.

The 1.8 kilometer-long Viernau forest educational trail starts and ends at the Nature Park Gate on the Wuhlheide in Viernau. It opens up a very forest-rich natural area: the "South Thuringian Bunter Sandstone Forest Land." Geological processes have fractured the large sandstone slab that runs along the Thuringian Forest to the south. Thus, in a small area, besides sandstone, you also find shell limestone and Zechstein sediments. This interplay of the "Viernaus Fault Zone" affects soil and vegetation. At the same time, the climate also changes here. The proximity to the low mountain range ensures more precipitation, cooler temperatures, and therefore more snow than in the hilly land. This lets the trees in the Viernau Forest grow well. The natural forest of oaks and beeches was converted centuries ago by humans into large spruce and pine forests. These are now slowly being pushed back in favor of the naturally occurring tree species here.

Der 1,8 Kilometer lange Waldlehrpafd Viernau startet und endet am Naturpark-Tor auf der Wuhlheide in Viernau.  Er erschließt einen sehr waldreichen Naturraum: das "Südthüringer Buntsandstein-Waldland". Durch geologische Vorgänge ist hier die große Sandsteinscholle die den Thüringer Wald südlich begleitet gebrochen. So findet man auf kleinsten Raum neben dem Sandstein auch Muschelkalk- und Zechsteinsedimente. Dieses Wechselspiel der "Viernauer Störungszone" hat Auswirkungen auf den Boden und die Vegetation. Gleichzeitig wechselt hier auch das Klima. Die Nähe zum Mittelgebirge sorgt für mehr Niederschläge, kühlere Temperaturen und damit mehr Schnee als im Hügelland. Das lässt die Bäume im Viernauer Forst gut wachsen. Der natürliche Wald aus Eichen und Buchen ist bereits vor Jahrhunderten durch den Menschen in große Fichten- und Kiefernforste umgewandelt worden. Die werden jetzt, zugunsten der hier natürlich vorkommenden Baumarten, langsam wieder zurückgedrängt.
