Die Johanniskirche ist die Stadt- und Hauptkirche von Gera. Sie wurde im neugotischen Stil erbaut. Bereits vor 1200 in der Nähe der alten Stadtburg gegründet, wurde sie dreimal durch Feuer zerstört und schließlich 1885 an einem neuen Standort eingeweiht. War die alte Kirche nach Johannes dem Täufer benannt, so nun die neue nach Johannes dem Evangelisten. Das einzige aus der alten Kirche gerettete Stück - das Kruzifix von 1650 - hat seinen Platz auf dem Altar. Auf Wunsch kann man den prächtigen Sarkophag von Heinrich Posthumus besichtigen.
L'église Johanniskirche est l'église principale de Gera. Elle a été construite dans le style néogothique. Déjà fondée avant 1200 à proximité de l'ancien château de la ville, elle a été détruite trois fois par le feu et finalement inaugurée en 1885 sur un nouveau site. Si l'ancienne église portait le nom de Jean-Baptiste, la nouvelle porte désormais celui de Jean l'Évangéliste. La seule pièce sauvée de l'ancienne église - le crucifix de 1650 - a trouvé sa place sur l'autel. Sur demande, il est possible de visiter le magnifique sarcophage d'Henri Posthumus.
St. John's Church is the town and main church of Gera. It was built in the neo-Gothic style. Founded near the old town castle before 1200, it was destroyed by fire three times and finally consecrated at a new location in 1885. While the old church was named after John the Baptist, the new one is now named after John the Evangelist. The only piece saved from the old church - the crucifix from 1650 - has its place on the altar. The magnificent sarcophagus of Heinrich Posthumus can be viewed on request.
