Christmas occupies a special place in Theodor Storm's life and writing. As much as he polemicizes against the church and Christianity as a free spirit, Storm devotes himself devoutly to the pious magic of Christmas every year. This is evidenced not only by the detailed accounts of the Storm family's festive rituals, but also by the stories and poems that deal with Christmas: from the romantic "Weihnachtslied" (Christmas Song) to the famous Christmas chapter of the early successful novella "Immensee" to the role poem "Knecht Ruprecht," probably the best-known Christmas poem in the German language. In his lecture, Christian Demandt presents Theodor Storm's Christmas texts and explores the question of how they are to be understood in their exciting contrast to Storm's criticism of religion.

Noël occupe une place particulière dans la vie et l'œuvre de Theodor Storm. Même s'il polémique en tant que libre penseur contre l'Église et le christianisme, Storm se laisse chaque année envahir par la magie pieuse de Noël. En témoignent non seulement les rituels festifs détaillés de la famille Storm, mais aussi les récits et poèmes qui traitent de Noël : du romantique « Weihnachtslied » (Chant de Noël) au célèbre chapitre de Noël de la nouvelle à succès « Immensee », en passant par le poème « Knecht Ruprecht », sans doute le poème de Noël le plus connu de la langue allemande. Dans sa conférence, Christian Demandt présente les textes de Noël de Theodor Storm et examine comment les comprendre dans leur contraste passionnant avec la critique religieuse de Storm.

Weihnachten nimmt im Leben und Schreiben Theodor Storms einen besonderen Platz ein. So sehr er als Freigeist gegen als Kirchliche und Christliche polemisiert, so andächtig gibt Storm sich zugleich alljährlich dem frommen Zauber von Weihnachten hin. Davon zeugen nicht nur die ausführlich überlieferten Festrituale der Familie Storm, sondern auch die Erzählungen und Gedichte, die von Weihnachten handeln: vom romantischen »Weihnachtslied« über das berühmte Weihnachtskapitel der frühen Erfolgsnovelle »Immensee« bis hin zum Rollengedicht »Knecht Ruprecht«, dem wohl bekanntesten Weihnachtsgedicht deutscher Sprache. Christian Demandt stellt in seinem Vortrag die weihnachtlichen Texte Theodor Storms vor und geht dabei der Frage nach, wie sie in ihrem spannungsvollen Kontrast zu Storms Religionskritik zu verstehen sind.
