Die katholische Filialkirche St. Antonius der Einsiedler in Obererthal ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Orts- und Kirchengeschichte. Der Ort wird erstmals im Jahr 1294 urkundlich erwähnt. Bereits im 13. Jahrhundert befand sich am heutigen Standort eine Kapelle. 1481 entstand eine Kirche, von der heute noch die Turmmauern erhalten sind. Der Ostturm mit Spitzhelm trägt das Wappen des Fuldaer Fürstabts Johann II. von Henneberg-Schleusingen. Nach Zerstörungen durch den Bauernkrieg und den Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurde das Gotteshaus mehrfach erneuert. In den Jahren 1864–1885 entstand das heutige Langhaus als neugotischer Saalbau mit eingezogenem Chor. Zur Ausstattung gehören ein Hochaltar, Seitenaltäre, eine Pietà und eine Orgel von Steinmeyer aus dem Jahr 1903. Ein Kriegerdenkmal mit Namenstafel aus dem Jahr 1895 erinnert an die Gefallenen des Krieges von 1870/71. Die Kirche steht unter Denkmalschutz und prägt bis heute das Ortsbild von Obererthal.
L'église catholique Saint-Antoine-l'Ermite à Obererthal est un élément important de l'histoire locale et religieuse. Le lieu est mentionné pour la première fois dans un document officiel en 1294. Au XIIIe siècle déjà, une chapelle se trouvait à l'emplacement actuel. En 1481, une église fut construite, dont les murs de la tour sont encore conservés aujourd'hui. La tour est, surmontée d'un toit pointu, porte les armoiries du prince-abbé de Fulda Johann II von Henneberg-Schleusingen. Après avoir été détruite pendant la guerre des paysans et la guerre de Trente Ans, l'église a été rénovée à plusieurs reprises. Entre 1864 et 1885, la nef actuelle a été construite dans un style néogothique avec un chœur en retrait. Elle est équipée d'un maître-autel, d'autels latéraux, d'une Pietà et d'un orgue Steinmeyer datant de 1903. Un monument aux morts avec une plaque commémorative datant de 1895 rend hommage aux soldats tombés pendant la guerre de 1870/71. L'église est classée monument historique et marque encore aujourd'hui le paysage urbain d'Obererthal.
The Catholic branch church of St. Anthony the Hermit in Obererthal is an important part of local and church history. The town was first mentioned in documents in 1294. A chapel already stood on the current site in the 13th century. In 1481, a church was built, the tower walls of which are still preserved today. The east tower with its pointed spire bears the coat of arms of Johann II von Henneberg-Schleusingen, Prince-Abbot of Fulda. After being destroyed during the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War, the church was renovated several times. Between 1864 and 1885, the present nave was built as a neo-Gothic hall with a recessed choir. The furnishings include a high altar, side altars, a Pietà, and a Steinmeyer organ from 1903. A war memorial with a name plaque from 1895 commemorates those who fell in the war of 1870–71. The church is a listed building and still dominates the townscape of Obererthal today.
