The Heiligenstadt City Palace was built between 1736 and 1738 according to plans by Dingelstadt architect Johann Christoph Heinemann as the administrative seat of the Mainz electors in Eichsfeld. The representative building was constructed in the Baroque style from local red sandstone on the historic Stiftsplatz, today's Friedensplatz, in the immediate vicinity of the oldest church in the city, St. Martin's. It captivates with its clear symmetry and harmoniously structured façade. Particularly worth seeing are the ornate coat of arms in the round gable above the entrance area with its two-sided star gate, the Laurentius Chapel, and the richly decorated stucco work inside. The castle is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic old town and is an important testimony to the history of the Electorate of Mainz in the region. Today, it serves, among other things, as the seat of the Eichsfeld district administration.
