St. Martin's Church, which is considered the original and mother church of the Eichsfeld region, is located on the east side of Friedensplatz and was the spiritual center of the region for over 1000 years. The current building, constructed from local red sandstone, is the third church on this site. The second building (847-856) was already a complex with side aisles, transept and a ring crypt, which served the cult of Saints Aureus and Justinus. The current late Gothic church was built around 1276 and completed in 1485. Damage from wars was repaired in the 18th century. In 1803, St. Martin's Abbey was secularized and the church, once the most traditional Catholic church in the region, was handed over to the Protestant community. St. Martin's is 56 meters long and 25 meters wide. The 60-metre-high bell tower houses the oldest bell in the Eichsfeld region (13th century) and a more recent bell from 1518 with the image of St. Martin. The west façade impresses with sculptures of Saints Aureus, Justinus, Martin, Sergius, Bacchus and Mary with the Child. A rose window above the main portal measures 4.5 meters in diameter. The interior, renovated from 1862 to 1868, is divided into central nave and side aisles by bundle pillars. In the choir is the neo-Gothic high altar from 1872. Other works of art include a lectern from the 14th century, the tomb of Archbishop Adolph von Nassau of Mainz and the oldest baptismal font in the city. Recent work has uncovered a crypt from the 9th century. Particularly noteworthy are the architectural decorative forms of the capitals and a crouching nun on a northern pillar in the central nave, which attracts many visitors. Exposed ceiling frescoes from the 16th century in the side aisle and from 1487 in the nave depict the angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin Mary.
