Experience the centuries-old tradition of the tanner and shoemaker craft. In Weida the tanner and shoemaker craft has a long tradition. In 1844 the tannery was founded by Johann Friedrich Franke and operated until 1992. In 2001 the town took over the building and continues to run it as a technical show monument. Whoever visits this industrial monument of a special kind is immersed in the 19th century. Some of the tanning pits are still filled and the old machines are still working. During the guided tours you can still smell leather and tan, the belts flutter to drive the bark crusher, the leather roller and the steam engine, you can experience how hard the work of the tanner was and how many steps were necessary to produce durable sole leather from a piece of cowhide.

Wer das Industriedenkmal der besonderen Art besucht, taucht in das 19. Jahrhundert ein. Die Gerbgruben sind zum Teil noch gefüllt, die alten Maschinen funktionieren noch. So riecht es bei den Führungen noch nach Leder und Lohe, es flattern die Riemen, um Rindenbrecher, Lederwalze und Dampfmaschine anzutreiben, man kann erfahren, wie schwer die Arbeit des Gerbers war und wie viele Arbeitsschritte notwendig waren, um aus einem Stück Rinderhaut haltbares Sohlenleder herzustellen.
