Auf der Grundfläche der heutigen Kiche befand sich früher eine romanische Kirche mit Friedhof und Wehrturm. Im Jahre 1607 wurde durch den Fürstbischof Julius Echter der Grundstein für die neue Kirche gelegt, wovon noch heute die Gedenktafel an der südlichen Außenwand zeugt, 1610 konnte die katholische Stadtpfarrkirche St. Georg eingeweiht werden. Die Kirche - wegen ihrer beachtlichen Größe im Volksmund auch Rhöndom genannt - ist eine dreischiffige Basilika mit stark überhöhtem Mittelschiff und einschiffigem Chor. Auffallend sind die hohen, sehr schmalen zweiteiligen Fenster mit gotischem Maßwerk. Die Fassade weist nachgotische Merkmale auf. Die Kanzel und das Taufbecken stammen noch aus der Bauzeit der Kirche. 1965/66 wurde die Kirche erweitert und das Treppenhäuschen des romanischen Wehrturmes integriert. 2018 - vermutlich bis ins Jahr 2019 hinein - wird die Kirche innen umfassend renoviert.

There used to be a Romanesque church with a cemetery and fortified tower on the site of today's church. The foundation stone for the new church was laid in 1607 by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter, as the memorial plaque on the southern outer wall still testifies today. The Catholic parish church of St. Georg was consecrated in 1610. The church - popularly known as the Rhöndom because of its considerable size - is a three-nave basilica with a high central nave and a single-nave choir. The tall, very narrow two-part windows with Gothic tracery are striking. The façade has post-Gothic features. The pulpit and baptismal font date from the time the church was built. The church was extended in 1965/66 and the staircase of the Romanesque fortified tower was integrated. In 2018 - probably into 2019 - the interior of the church will be extensively renovated.
