Franken sollen die Gegend an der Werra nach der Niederschlagung des Thüringer Königreiches besiedelt haben, aber erst 1104 wird der Ort Frankenroda urkundlich erwähnt, was aber bei weitem nicht das wirkliche Alter des Dorfes anspricht. Zahlreiche Wander- und Radwege mit hervorragenden Aussichtspunkten durch das herrliche Werratal von Hann. Münden bis zum Thüringer Wald sind Ziele vieler Erholungssuchender. Weiterhin, 2 km vom Ort entfernt, ebenfalls an der Werra, befindet sich das ehemalige Kloster Probstei Zella mit Bootssteg, Angelteich, Camping, Reitplatz u. v. a.
