Das kleine Harzer Bergdorf Sophienhof gehört zum Ortsteil Ilfeld der Gemeinde Harztor und liegt idyllisch auf einem Wiesenhochplateau in etwa 550 Metern Höhe umringt von dichten Wäldern. Auch mit der historischen Dampflok der Harzer Schmalspurbahnen ist Sophienhof erreichbar. Am Haltepunkt beginnt der ausgezeichnete Qualitätswanderweg Südharzer Dampflok Steig, der über Ilfeld und Neustadt/Harz bis nach Nordhausen führt. Radfahrer können die Wiesen und Wälder zum Beispiel über die Routen der Harzer Mountainbike Arena erkunden. Die Waldsiedlung ist seit dem 16. Jahrhundert belegt. Der Name Sophienhof tauchte 1717 zum ersten Mal auf, was vermutlich auf die Gräfin Sophie Charlotte zu Stolberg zurückgeht. Schon seit 1709 durften die Sophienhofer Bier brauen und ausschenken. An diese historische Tradition knüpft heute das Hotel Brauner Hirsch an, dass sein selbst gebrautes Bier frisch in der Gaststube zapft. In Sophienhof leben übrigens mehr Ziegen als Menschen – die Ziegenalm ist eine der größten Freilandanlage dieser Art in Thüringen. Der Familienbetrieb bietet handgemachte Produkte wie aromatischen Käse und Ziegenmilcheis an. Das idyllische Bergdorf ist der ideale Urlaubsort für Familien, aktive Naturliebhaber und entspannte Tage.
