Der Skatbrunnen in Altenburg gehört für die Besucher der Stadt zu den Hauptattraktionen. Er stellt als weltweit einziger Brunnen, der einem Kartenspiel gewidmet ist, eine Besonderheit dar. Seine Geschichte führt in die Zeit der Jahrhundertwende zurück. Im Jahre 1897 spendete der Apotheker und leidenschaftliche Skatspieler aus Altenburg Albert Steudemann der Stadt 15.000 Goldmark für den Bau eines Denkmals, das den Spielkarten gewidmet sein soll. Mit großem Elan wurde ein Wettbewerb initiiert. Der Münchner Künstler Ernst Pfeiffer gewann mit dem besten Entwurf für einen Brunnen. Er kreierte vier raufende Wenzel, die um den entscheidenden „Stich“ kämpfen. Dem Skatspiel getreu gewinnt der Eichelwenzel über den Grünwenzel, der bereits den Rotwenzel und den Schellwenzel überwältigt hat. Das Brunnenwasser fließt aus zwei bronzenen Schweinsköpfen, welche dem Skatspieler bei Berührung Glück bringen. Auch eine Kartentaufe im Brunnenwasser verhilft zu einem guten Spiel. Die Einweihung des Brunnens fand am 9. September 1903 anlässlich des 6. Deutschen Skatkongresses statt. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg jedoch schmolz man die Bronzefiguren und die Schweinsköpfe des Brunnens sowie das um den Brunnenplatz angebrachte Eisengitter für Munitionsmaterial ein. 1955 wurden Dank einer Bürgerinitiative die Figuren nachgegossen und es erfolgte eine Wiedereinweihung. Somit steht der Brunnen bis heute auf dem Brühl, dem alten Markt, in Altenburg. Die relativ zentrale Lage des Skatbrunnens ermöglicht es, dass jede touristische Route daran vorbeiführen kann und der Brunnen zu einem festen Bestandteil von Stadtführungen geworden ist. Er ist ein „Muss“ für jeden Touristen in Altenburg. Sowohl das Berühren der Schweinsköpfe als auch die Kartentaufe sollen zu stetigem Glück im Spiel verhelfen.

The Skat Fountain in Altenburg is one of the main attractions for visitors to the town. As the only fountain in the world dedicated to a card game, it is a special feature.
