St. Aegidien, the third and youngest Gothic church in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, was founded in 1227 when the town was elevated to city status. After the town fire of 1333, the three-nave church was rebuilt from local red sandstone until 1370. The church measures 52 meters in length and 18 meters in width, although only the southern polar tower was completed in 1852. Externally simple, the church impresses with its choir area, whose three-part central window with tracery and the floral cross as a gable finial are considered particularly beautiful. An unidentified figure in bishop's regalia, presumably Archbishop Siegfried II, adorns a sculpture niche. The west portal (around 1370) is rich in figures and shows Mary with the child, the Magi, St. Vitus, St. Catherine and the church's patron saint Aegidius. A scene of the Mount of Olives is depicted above the south portal, while the north portal is kept simple. Inside the church there are numerous valuable works of art, including the high altar from the former collegiate church of Quedlinburg (1689-1691), a late Gothic crucifix (around 1500) and a shrine with the relics of the city's patron saints in the altar of celebration. Other works of art include the tomb palette of Bishop Aureus and Deacon Justinus, the St. Anne altar (around 1500), a Madonna on the crescent moon (late 17th century), the fourteen-node altar (1638), a bronze baptismal font by Hans Rese (1507), a Baroque pulpit (around 1740) and a late Gothic Pieta at the southern entrance. Eleven processional poles of the Heiligenstadt guilds adorn the western wall. The Maria Hilf Chapel, built in 1861 to replace a wooden chapel from 1494, features a late Gothic Madonna and Child (around 1450).
