Im Jahre 1325 wurde der Ort Schönbrunn erstmalig erwähnt, mit Sicherheit ist dieser – und besonders die Kirche – jedoch älter. Vermutlich stammen Teile des Gebäudes (insbesondere der Chorraum, die Apsis und Teile des heutigen Langhauses) aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. 1682 wurde die Kirche umfassend saniert und verändert. Die auffällige Gestalt der Turmhaube stammt aus dieser Zeit. Auch wurde die Fenster im Innenraum erheblich vergrößert, um den Kirchenraum heller zu gestalten. Erst um 1780 bekam die Kirche die heutigen Emporen und erst um 1900 fand bei der umfassenden Sanierung der Einbau der heutigen Kanzel und des Gestühls statt. Bei der Restaurierung 2004 wurden Festken aus dem 12. Jahrhundert gefunden und wieder sichtbar gemacht. Diese schmücken insbesondere den Chorraum und die Apsis. Die Orgel stammt aus der Werkstatt des Schleizer Orgelbauers Ernst Poppe. Von den zwei Glocken im Turm ist im Besondern auf die älter der Beiden zu verweisen: Diese stammt aus dem Jahre 1521 und ist eine wahre Kostbarkeit. The village of Schönbrunn was first mentioned in 1325, but it – and especially the church – is certainly older than that. Parts of the building (in particular the choir, the apse, and parts of the present nave) probably date back to the 12th century. In 1682, the church underwent extensive renovation and alteration. The striking design of the tower dome dates from this period. The windows in the interior were also enlarged considerably to make the church interior brighter. It was not until around 1780 that the church was given its current galleries, and it was not until around 1900 that the current pulpit and pews were installed during extensive renovation work. During the restoration in 2004, 12th-century frescoes were found and made visible again. These adorn the choir room and the apse in particular. The organ comes from the workshop of the Schleiz organ builder Ernst Poppe. Of the two bells in the tower, the older of the two is particularly noteworthy: it dates from 1521 and is a real treasure. The Schönbrunn Church is part of the Ebersdorf parish.
