Die Weimarer Fürsten und Landesherren förderten die Reformation. Und so hielt sich Luther mehrfach in Weimar auf. Im Oktober 1522 erklärte Luther seine Auffassung zu "Weltlicher Obrigkeit, wie weit man ihr Gehorsam schuldig sei". Dies war die Basis für eine seiner reformatorischen Hauptschriften "Von der Freiheit eines Christenmenschen". Luther wohnte während seiner Aufenthalte in Weimar im Franziskanerkloster (heute die Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT). Bei seinem letzten Weimarbesuch logierte Luther im Haus von Spalatins Bruder (heute Lutherhof). 1552 kommt Lucas Cranach d.Ä. nach Weimar. Der 80-jährige Hofmaler folgt seinem protestantischem Landesherrn ins Exil. Lucas Cranach d.J. vollendet schließlich den Altar, den Lucas Cranach d.Ä. begann. Der Flügelaltar in der Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul gilt als wichtigstes Zeugnis der Reformation. Im Cranach Haus verbrachte Lucas Cranach d.Ä. sein letztes Lebensjahr. Er gründete vor seinem Tod noch eine Werkstatt und nahm zwei Schüler auf. Das Haus ist ein bedeutender denkmalgeschützter Renaissance-Bau und gehört mit zwei weiteren Gebäuden als Gesamtensemble zum UNESCO - Weltkulturerbe. Eine Cranach-Galerie hat im Stadtschloss ihr Domizil. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung Apoldas fällt in das Jahr 1119. Darin wird Apolda als Siedlung mit zwei Kirchen erwähnt, der Martinskirche und der St.-Johannis-Kapelle, die 1524 beim Umbau des Schlosses abgerissen wurde. Im gleichen Jahr nimmt Apolda die Lehre Luthers an. Die Lutherkirche prägt wie keine andere das Stadtbild Apoldas. Sie befindet sich in der Stadtmitte am Melanchthonplatz, ist die größte der vier Apoldaer Kirchen und mit ihrer für Thüringen unüblichen Backsteinbauweise etwas Besonderes. Heute wird die Lutherkirche für Kulturveranstaltungen genutzt.

L'autel à volets de l'église Saint-Pierre-et-Paul est considéré comme le témoignage le plus important de la Réforme. Dans la maison Cranach, Lucas Cranach l'Ancien a passé sa dernière année de vie. Avant sa mort, il a encore fondé un atelier et accueilli deux apprentis. La maison est un bâtiment Renaissance protégé et fait partie d'un ensemble architectural de l'UNESCO avec deux autres bâtiments. Une galerie Cranach a son domicile dans le château de la ville. La première mention documentaire d'Apolda remonte à 1119. Apolda y est décrite comme un village avec deux églises, l'église Saint-Martin et la chapelle Saint-Jean, détruite en 1524 lors de la transformation du château. La même année, Apolda adopte l'enseignement de Luther. L'église Luther façonne le paysage urbain d'Apolda comme aucune autre. Située en centre-ville sur la place Melanchthon, c'est la plus grande des quatre églises d'Apolda et elle est particulière par sa construction en briques, inhabituelle pour la Thuringe. Aujourd'hui, l'église Luther est utilisée pour des événements culturels.

The 80-year-old court painter followed his Protestant territorial lord into exile. Lucas Cranach the Younger finally completed the altar that Lucas Cranach the Elder had begun. The winged altar in the St. Peter and Paul city church is considered the most important testimony of the Reformation. Lucas Cranach the Elder spent his last year of life in the Cranach House. Before his death, he founded a workshop and took on two students. The house is an important listed Renaissance building and, together with two other buildings as an ensemble, belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Cranach gallery is located in the city palace. The first documented mention of Apolda dates back to 1119. Apolda is mentioned as a settlement with two churches, St. Martin's Church and the St. John's Chapel, which was demolished in 1524 during the renovation of the castle. In the same year, Apolda adopted Luther's doctrine. The Luther Church shapes the cityscape of Apolda like no other. It is located in the city center at Melanchthonplatz, is the largest of the four Apolda churches, and with its brick construction, unusual for Thuringia, is something special. Today the Luther Church is used for cultural events.
