Au Rennsteighotel et au Gasthof Hubertus à Neustadt am Rennsteig commence la 3e étape du relais Rennsteig. De là jusqu'à la sortie nord de la localité, le Rennsteig suit la route locale. Ensuite, on tourne à gauche sur un chemin herbeux. Puis on franchit le Großer Burgberg via un chemin forestier. Après, on rejoint le Rennsteig au nord de la route reliant Neustadt à Ilmenau jusqu'au Großer Dreiherrenstein. Depuis le Großer Dreiherrenstein, le Rennsteig suit des chemins forestiers et des sentiers racinaires vers l'ouest jusqu'à la gare Rennsteig puis jusqu'à la croisée Rennsteig. Par des chemins forestiers qui croisent plusieurs fois la route entre la croisée Rennsteig et Oberhof, le Rennsteig arrive à la station météorologique Schmücke. Entre la Schmücke et la suhler Ausspanne, on atteint à la Plänckners Aussicht (973 m NHN) le point le plus haut du Rennsteig. De la Suhler Ausspanne jusqu'au jardin Rennsteig et au Rondell, le Rennsteig suit la direction nord vers Oberhof. Après le Rondell, la montée mène au Dietzel-Geba-Stein, aussi appelé Stein 16. Là, le parcours quitte le Rennsteig en descendant vers le nord-est jusqu'à l'arrivée à l'hôtel sportif Oberhof.

The 3rd stage of the Rennsteig stage run starts at Rennsteighotel and Gasthof Hubertus in Neustadt am Rennsteig. From there, the Rennsteig runs along the village road to the northern exit of the town. Then it turns left onto a meadow path. Afterwards, the Große Burgberg is crossed via a forest path. Then the Rennsteig leads north of the road connecting Neustadt and Ilmenau to the Großer Dreiherrenstein. From the Großer Dreiherrenstein, the Rennsteig runs westwards over forest paths and root paths to the Rennsteig train station and further to the Rennsteig crossing. Over forest paths that cross the road between the Rennsteig crossing and Oberhof several times, the Rennsteig reaches the Wetterstation Schmücke. Between Schmücke and Suhler Ausspanne, the highest point of the Rennsteig is reached at Plänckners Aussicht (973 m above sea level). From Suhler Ausspanne to the Rennsteiggarten and Rondell, the Rennsteig runs northwards towards Oberhof. After the Rondell, the route goes uphill to the Dietzel-Geba Stone, also called Stone 16. There, the racecourse leaves the Rennsteig, descending northeast to the finish at the Sporthotel Oberhof.

Am Rennsteighotel und Gasthof Hubertus in Neustadt am Rennsteig startet die 3. Etappe des Rennsteig-Etappenlaufs. Von da aus bis zum nördlichen Ortsausgang verläuft der Rennsteig auf der Ortsstraße. Danach wird links auf einen Wiesenpfad eingebogen. Anschließend wird über einen Forstweg der Große Burgberg überquert. Anschließend gelangt man auf dem Rennsteig nördlich der Straße, die Neustadt und Ilmenau verbindet zum Großen Dreiherrenstein. Ab Großem Dreiherrenstein verläuft der Rennsteig über Waldwege und Wurzelpfade westwärts bis zum Bahnhof Rennsteig und weiter zur Rennsteigkreuzung. Über Waldwege, die die Straße zwischen der Rennsteigkreuzung und Oberhof mehrfach queren, gelangt der Rennsteig an die Wetterstation Schmücke. Zwischen der Schmücke und der Suhler Ausspanne wird an der Plänckners Aussicht (973m NHN) der höchste Punkt des Rennsteigs erreicht. Von der Suhler Ausspann bis zum Rennsteiggarten und Rondell verläuft der Rennsteig in nördlicher Richtung nach Oberhof. Nach dem Rondell geht es bergauf zum Dietzel-Geba-Stein, auch Stein 16 genannt. Dort verlässt die Laufstrecke den Rennsteig abwärts in nordöstlicher Richtung zum Ziel am Sporthotel Oberhof.

Westliche des Dreiherrensteines befindet sich unweit die Mitte des 168,3km langen Rennsteigs. * Am Bahnhof Rennsteig erreichte die 1904 eröffnete und 2001 stillgelegte Bahnstrecke Erfurt-Schleusingen in 747m NHN ihren höchsten Punkt. * An der Alten Tränke wurde einst Vieh aus dem talwärts gelegenen Ort Schmiedefeld geweidet und mit Wasser versorgt. * Der Name Mordfleck leitet sich von der Bezeichnung Moorfleck ab. Bis dahin unterstützten Vorgespanne bergauf die Pferdegespanne beim Transport schwerer lasten. * Am Rondell mit einem Obelisk der Baus der Verbindungsstraße von Gotha nach Suhl gewürdigt, die unter Leitung Julius von Plänckner 1830-1882 gebaut wurde.
