schema:value @de <p><strong>Der Ausgangspunkt</strong> </p> <p>Vorbei am Craulaer Kreuz führt der Weg nach einigen Metern links durch einen baumartenreichen Mischbestand auf einen breiten Forstweg. Über eine kleine Brücke verlässt der Wanderer diesen wieder und kommt in das Lange Tal.</p> <p><strong>Langes Tal</strong></p> <p>Das Waldbild im Lange Tal (Oberlauf) beherrschen Buchen; vereinzelt sind Bergahorne an ihrer abblätternden schuppigen Rinde zu erkennen. Entlang des Tals zeigt sich die natürliche Walddynamik - in lichteren Bereichen kämpfen kleine Buchen und Eschen ums Licht. Selbst auf den Stämmen erwacht neues Leben; neben Moosen, Flechten und Pilzen können durchaus auch kleine Baumkeimlinge entdeckt werden.</p> <p><strong>Wurzelteller</strong></p> <p>Der Wurzelteller einer Buche öffnet den Blick in den Untergrund - die Wurzeln konnten das Kalkgestein nicht durchdringen; sie durchwurzelten den Boden nur oberflächlich.</p> <p>Im breiter werdenden Talgrund fallen die tiefeingeschnittenen Blätter oder gelben Blüten einer Waldbodenpflanze auf.</p> <p>Der Gelbe Eisenhut ist eine der wenigen Pflanzen des Laubmischwaldes, die fast das ganze Jahr zu sehen ist - schon im April sind frisch ausgetriebene Blätter zu entdecken, von Juni bis August fallen hellgelbe Blüten ins Auge und bis in den November hinein kann man Stengel mit Balgfrüchten finden. Im Volksmund wird die Pflanze auch Wolfs-Eisenhut genannt, was auf ihre giftige Wirkung, die u.a. zum Vergiften von Wölfen genutzt wurde, hinweist.</p> <p>Von der Wendeschleife im Langen Tal geht es über eine 100-stufige Treppe, der Himmelsleiter, den Muschelkalkhang des Sperbersgrundes hinauf in die Schutzzone 1 des Nationalparks.</p> <p><strong>Sperbersgrund</strong></p> <p>Der Sperbersgrund ist eines der vielen, den Muschelkalkzug des Hainichs strukturierenden Tälchen. Im feuchteren Talgrund wachsen verstärkt Eschen und Ahorne, entlang der Talkante dominieren die Buchen. Immer wieder gestalten umgestürzte Stämme - liegendes und stehendes Totholz bizarr mit Zunderschwamm bewachsen - das Waldbild.</p> <p><strong>Tot und doch nicht tot</strong></p> <p>Den Muschelkalkrücken entlang, um einen Talausläufer des Sperbersgrundes herum, kommt man zu einer toten und zugleich lebendigen Buche. Ein dramatischer Lebenskampf spielt sich ab. Vor einigen Jahren im Stammbereich gebrochen, von Insekten zerfressen, von Spechten ausgehöhlt, von Pilzen zersetzt, treibt die Buche unterhalb der Bruchstelle einen neuen Ast. Nur wenige Zentimeter lebendige Verbindung von der Wurzel zur Krone reichen dem Baum zum Überleben. Wie lange noch?</p> <p>Etwas unterhalb der Buche biegt der Weg nach links ab und führt durch einen Jungwald aus Eschen und Buchen, in dem nur noch einige Altbuchen an den einstigen Wald erinnern, bis zur Wendeschleife "Maßholder" - einer ortstypischen Bezeichnung für Feldahorn.</p> <p><strong>Wartburgblick</strong></p> <p>Nun geht es nach rechts zu einem kleinen Abstecher auf den Kindel - zum "Wartburgblick" - von dem man einen weiten Blick über die Wiederbewaldungsflächen des Kindel, auf die Berge des Thüringer Waldes und natürlich die Wartburg genießen kann.</p> <p>Der Name Kindel geht auf den "Kindelhof" zurück, dessen Flächen in den schon seit 1935 existierenden Truppenübungsplatz einbezogen wurden. Bis 1991 nutzte die Sowjetarmee die 2.540 Hektar großen Flächen. Zur Anlage von Schießbahnen wurden Anfang der achtziger Jahre 600 Hektar Laubwald eingeschlagen. Diese Flächen bleiben der natürlichen Wiederbewaldung überlassen. Für Mitteleuropa einmalig, kann nun die Entwicklung zum Wald auf riesigen Sukzessionsflächen beobachtet werden.</p> <p>Zurück am "Maßholder" geht es am Waldrand entlang, den wiederum der Wechsel von Totholz- und Verjüngungsbereichen prägt, später am Rande einer Fichtendickung vorbei bis zur Turnerbank.</p> <p><strong>Die Turnerbank</strong></p> <p>Von der Turnerbank, ursprünglich 1928 vom Turnverein Craula aufgestellt, erblickt man rechter Hand den Alten Berg - mit 494 m die höchste Erhebung des Hainich, knapp außerhalb des Nationalparks. Kurz nach der Turnerbank führt links ein Abstecher wenige Meter in den Wald zum Stumpf einer mächtigen Buche.</p> <p>Der Weg führt nun entlang der Nationalparkgrenze - gleichzeitig Grenze zur Kulturlandschaft - zurück zum Wanderparkplatz "Craulaer Kreuz".</p>

schema:value @en <p><strong>The Starting Point</strong> </p> <p>Past the Craulaer Kreuz, the path leads left after a few meters through a mixed stand rich in tree species onto a wide forest track. Crossing a small bridge, the hiker leaves this path again and enters the Lange Tal (Long Valley).</p> <p><strong>Long Valley</strong></p> <p>The forest scene in the upper course of the Long Valley is dominated by beeches; occasional sycamores can be identified by their peeling, scaly bark. Along the valley, the natural dynamics of the forest are evident – in lighter areas, small beeches and ashes compete for light. New life awakens even on the trunks; alongside mosses, lichens and fungi, small tree seedlings can certainly also be discovered.</p> <p><strong>Root Plate</strong></p> <p>The root plate of a beech tree opens the view into the underground – the roots could not penetrate the limestone rock; they only rooted superficially in the soil.</p> <p>In the broadening valley floor, deeply cut leaves or yellow flowers of an understory plant stand out.</p> <p>The yellow aconite is one of the few plants of the deciduous mixed forest that can be seen almost all year round – freshly sprouted leaves can already be discovered in April, from June to August pale yellow flowers catch the eye, and stems with pods can be found until November. In folk language, the plant is also called wolf’s aconite, referring to its poisonous effect, which among other things was used to poison wolves.</p> <p>From the turnaround loop in the Long Valley, a 100-step staircase, the "Heaven’s Ladder," leads up the Muschelkalk slope of the Sperbersgrund into protection zone 1 of the national park.</p> <p><strong>Sperbersgrund</strong></p> <p>The Sperbersgrund is one of many small valleys structuring the Muschelkalk formation of the Hainich. In the moister valley bottom, ashes and maples grow more intensively, while beeches dominate along the valley edge. Fallen trunks – both lying and standing deadwood with tinder fungus growing on them – form the bizarre forest picture again and again.</p> <p><strong>Dead but not Dead</strong></p> <p>Along the Muschelkalk ridge, around a valley tributary of the Sperbersgrund, you come across a beech tree that is dead and yet alive. A dramatic struggle for life is unfolding. Broken in the trunk area several years ago, devoured by insects, hollowed out by woodpeckers, decomposed by fungi, the beech puts out a new branch below the break. Only a few centimeters of living connection from the root to the crown are enough for the tree to survive. How much longer?</p> <p>Shortly below the beech, the path turns left and leads through a young forest of ashes and beeches, where only a few old beeches still recall the former forest, to the "Maßholder" turnaround loop – a local name for field maple.</p> <p><strong>Wartburg View</strong></p> <p>Now head right for a small detour to the Kindel – to the "Wartburg View" – from where you can enjoy a wide view over the reforested areas of the Kindel, the mountains of the Thuringian Forest, and of course the Wartburg.</p> <p>The name Kindel traces back to the "Kindelhof," whose areas were included in the military training area existing since 1935. Until 1991, the Soviet Army used the 2,540-hectare area. To establish shooting ranges, 600 hectares of deciduous forest were felled in the early 1980s. These areas are left to natural reforestation. Unique for Central Europe, the development of forest on huge succession areas can now be observed.</p> <p>Back at the "Maßholder," the route follows the forest edge, again characterized by alternating deadwood and regeneration areas, then passes the edge of a dense spruce stand before reaching the Turnerbank.</p> <p><strong>The Turnerbank</strong></p> <p>From the Turnerbank, originally erected in 1928 by the Craula gymnastics club, on the right hand you can see Alten Berg – at 494 m the highest elevation of the Hainich, just outside the national park. Shortly after the Turnerbank, a short detour to the left leads a few meters into the forest to the stump of a mighty beech.</p> <p>The path now follows the national park boundary – simultaneously the border to the cultural landscape – back to the Craulaer Kreuz parking lot.</p>

Entlang des Tals zeigt sich die natürliche Walddynamik - in lichteren Bereichen kämpfen kleine Buchen und Eschen ums Licht. Selbst auf den Stämmen erwacht neues Leben; neben Moosen, Flechten und Pilzen können durchaus auch kleine Baumkeimlinge entdeckt werden. Wurzelteller Der Wurzelteller einer Buche öffnet den Blick in den Untergrund - die Wurzeln konnten das Kalkgestein nicht durchdringen; sie durchwurzelten den Boden nur oberflächlich. Im breiter werdenden Talgrund fallen die tiefeingeschnittenen Blätter oder gelben Blüten einer Waldbodenpflanze auf. Der Gelbe Eisenhut ist eine der wenigen Pflanzen des Laubmischwaldes, die fast das ganze Jahr zu sehen ist - schon im April sind frisch ausgetriebene Blätter zu entdecken, von Juni bis August fallen hellgelbe Blüten ins Auge und bis in den November hinein kann man Stengel mit Balgfrüchten finden. Im Volksmund wird die Pflanze auch Wolfs-Eisenhut genannt, was auf ihre giftige Wirkung, die u.a. zum Vergiften von Wölfen genutzt wurde, hinweist. Von der Wendeschleife im Langen Tal geht es über eine 100-stufige Treppe, der Himmelsleiter, den Muschelkalkhang des Sperbersgrundes hinauf in die Schutzzone 1 des Nationalparks. Sperbersgrund Der Sperbersgrund ist eines der vielen, den Muschelkalkzug des Hainichs strukturierenden Tälchen. Im feuchteren Talgrund wachsen verstärkt Eschen und Ahorne, entlang der Talkante dominieren die Buchen. Immer wieder gestalten umgestürzte Stämme - liegendes und stehendes Totholz bizarr mit Zunderschwamm bewachsen - das Waldbild. Tot und doch nicht tot Den Muschelkalkrücken entlang, um einen Talausläufer des Sperbersgrundes herum, kommt man zu einer toten und zugleich lebendigen Buche. Ein dramatischer Lebenskampf spielt sich ab. Vor einigen Jahren im Stammbereich gebrochen, von Insekten zerfressen, von Spechten ausgehöhlt, von Pilzen zersetzt, treibt die Buche unterhalb der Bruchstelle einen neuen Ast. Nur wenige Zentimeter lebendige Verbindung von der Wurzel zur Krone reichen dem Baum zum Überleben. Wie lange noch? Etwas unterhalb der Buche biegt der Weg nach links ab und führt durch einen Jungwald aus Eschen und Buchen, in dem nur noch einige Altbuchen an den einstigen Wald erinnern, bis zur Wendeschleife "Maßholder" - einer ortstypischen Bezeichnung für Feldahorn. Wartburgblick Nun geht es nach rechts zu einem kleinen Abstecher auf den Kindel - zum "Wartburgblick" - von dem man einen weiten Blick über die Wiederbewaldungsflächen des Kindel, auf die Berge des Thüringer Waldes und natürlich die Wartburg genießen kann. Der Name Kindel geht auf den "Kindelhof" zurück, dessen Flächen in den schon seit 1935 existierenden Truppenübungsplatz einbezogen wurden. Bis 1991 nutzte die Sowjetarmee die 2.540 Hektar großen Flächen. Zur Anlage von Schießbahnen wurden Anfang der achtziger Jahre 600 Hektar Laubwald eingeschlagen. Diese Flächen bleiben der natürlichen Wiederbewaldung überlassen. Für Mitteleuropa einmalig, kann nun die Entwicklung zum Wald auf riesigen Sukzessionsflächen beobachtet werden. Zurück am "Maßholder" geht es am Waldrand entlang, den wiederum der Wechsel von Totholz- und Verjüngungsbereichen prägt, später am Rande einer Fichtendickung vorbei bis zur Turnerbank. Die Turnerbank Von der Turnerbank, ursprünglich 1928 vom Turnverein Craula aufgestellt, erblickt man rechter Hand den Alten Berg - mit 494 m die höchste Erhebung des Hainich, knapp außerhalb des Nationalparks. Kurz nach der Turnerbank führt links ein Abstecher wenige Meter in den Wald zum Stumpf einer mächtigen Buche. Der Weg führt nun entlang der Nationalparkgrenze - gleichzeitig Grenze zur Kulturlandschaft - zurück zum Wanderparkplatz "Craulaer Kreuz".

From the turnaround loop in the Long Valley, a 100-step staircase, the "Heaven’s Ladder," leads up the Muschelkalk slope of the Sperbersgrund into protection zone 1 of the national park. In the moister valley bottom, ashes and maples grow more intensively, while beeches dominate along the valley edge. Dead but not Dead Along the Muschelkalk ridge, around a valley tributary of the Sperbersgrund, you come across a beech tree that is dead and yet alive. A dramatic struggle for life is unfolding. Broken in the trunk area several years ago, devoured by insects, hollowed out by woodpeckers, decomposed by fungi, the beech puts out a new branch below the break. Only a few centimeters of living connection from the root to the crown are enough for the tree to survive. How much longer? Shortly below the beech, the path turns left and leads through a young forest of ashes and beeches, where only a few old beeches still recall the former forest, to the "Maßholder" turnaround loop – a local name for field maple. Wartburg View Now head right for a small detour to the Kindel – to the "Wartburg View" – from where you can enjoy a wide view over the reforested areas of the Kindel, the mountains of the Thuringian Forest, and of course the Wartburg.
