Dort, ziemlich genau an 18 Punkten, standen einst kleinere und größere Knopffabriken. Diese machten im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert und in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts Schmölln weit über seine Grenzen hinaus, deutschlandweit, bekannt. Die Knopfmacherindustrie hat Schmölln zu großer Bekanntheit verholfen, die über Deutschland hinaus strahlte.
