Im äußeren Osten Thüringens liegt im idyllischen Sprottetal die Stadt Schmölln, welche 1066 erstmals urkundlich unter dem Namen „zmulna“ erwähnt wurde. Unser Knopf- und Regionalmuseum bietet vielfältige Informationen zur Entwicklung der Schmöllner Knopfindustrie, die jahrzehntelang prägend für die Stadtgeschichte war. Im Jahr 1867 begannen die Brüder Hermann und Valentin Donath mit der Produktion von Steinnussknöpfen. Bis zur Wende des 20. Jahrhunderts entstanden 29 Knopffabriken. Schmölln avancierte zur „Knopfstadt“ mit weltweiten Absatzmärkten. Die Ausstellung zeigt neben Fotografien und Dokumenten, Rohstoffe der Knopfproduktion, Gerätschaften sowie historische Maschinen – und natürlich jede Menge Knöpfe. Im regionalgeschichtlichen Teil gibt es Wissenswertes zur Stadtgeschichte, zur Kamm- und Bürstenindustrie, dem Altenburger Bauernleben und zum berühmten Schmöllner Mutzbraten zu entdecken. Das Museum liegt unmittelbar an den Radwanderwegen Thüringer Städtekette, Thüringenweg, Lutherweg sowie dem Wasser-Erlebnisweg von Schmölln nach Posterstein.

In the outer east of Thuringia, in the idyllic Sprotte valley, lies the town of Schmölln, which was first mentioned in a document in 1066 under the name "zmulna". Our button and regional museum offers a variety of information on the development of the Schmölln button industry, which for decades was formative for the town's history. In 1867 the brothers Hermann and Valentin Donath started the production of stone nut buttons. By the turn of the 20th century, 29 button factories had been established. Schmölln advanced to the "button city" with worldwide sales markets. The exhibition shows photographs and documents, raw materials for button production, equipment and historical machines - and of course lots of buttons. In the regional history section, there are interesting facts to discover about the history of the town, the comb and brush industry, Altenburg farm life and the famous Schmöllner Mutzbraten. The museum is located directly on the Thuringian Town Chain, Thuringian Trail, Luther Trail and the Water Adventure Trail from Schmölln to Posterstein.
