Der Themenweg erinnert an die Anfänge des Segelfluges im Altenburger Land, mit der Segelfluggruppe in Ponitz und führt zum Kieferberg bei Ponitz, dem Ort des Erstfluges. DIE SEGELFLIEGER VOM KIEFERNBERG - der Beginn des Segelfluges im Altenburger Land Chronologie des Segelfluges in Ponitz von 1932 bis 1937 *  Nach ersten Segelflugversuchen 1920 auf der Wasserkuppe begann die breite Entwicklung des Segelfluges in Deutschland * 1928 erfolgten erste Flugversuche auf dem Kieferberg durch Otto Frosch * Am 18.8.1932 Gründung der Segelfluggruppe Ponitz (Sepo) durch Lehrer Kurt Burkhardt mit etwa 15 Gründungsmitgliedern * Im Nov. 1932 Weihe des ersten Segelflugzeuges „Ponitz“ im Gasthof Etling * Am 5.Feb.1933 erfolgte der Erstflug des Segelflugzeuges „Ponitz“ vom Westhang des Kiefernberges unter Leitung des Fluglehrers Bonitz aus Glauchau * Zur Flughafenweihe am 13.Mai 1934 in Altenburg-Nobitz erregte das Segelflugzeug „Ponitz“ großes Aufsehen * 1934 begann der Bau des Hochleistungs- Segelflugzeuges vom Typ“ STANAVO“ in der Lackfabrik Gustav Struve in Gößnitz, deren Taufe erfolgte am 17.August 1935 * Ab 1935 wurde diente der Segelflugsport immer mehr zur Nachwuchsgewinnung für die Luftwaffe, einige Ponitzer Segelflieger kamen im 2.Weltkrieg als Piloten oder Flugzeugmechaniker zum Einsatz * 1937 endete der Segelflug auf dem Kiefernberg, die Ponitzer Segelflieger flogen dann auf dem Segelflugplatz „Lohberg“ bei Windischleuba  Erst 2012 wurde bekannt, dass der Altenburger Segelflieger Heinz Pechmann von Sept.1933 bis Aug. 1934 als Fluglehrer in der Ortsgruppe Ponitz tätig war   ( Text Jürgen Müller, 2024)
