Das erste Mal urkundlich erwähnt wurde die Gemeinde am Rieth unmittelbar im Norden der Landeshauptstadt Erfurt 876 in einer ostfränkischen Urkunde als „Nordhusa“. Den heute gebräuchlichen Ortsnamen gibt es seit 1483. Allgemein bekannt ist das Dorf als „Nurzen“, entstanden aus der hier in der Gegend gebräuchlichen Verkürzung der richtigen Ortsbezeichnungen. Das Wahrzeichen von „Nurzen“ ist die auch im Ortswappen verankerte Bonifatius-Kirche. Sie ist auf dem 183 Meter hohen Kirchberg gebaut worden und weit ins Land hinein zu sehen. Napoleon, der mit seinen Truppen 1806 durch die Gegend zog, soll sie deswegen „Thüringer Laterne“ genannt haben. Seit 2016 steht eine Fuchs-Bronzeplastik auf dem Schenksplatz in der Dorfmitte als Maskottchen der Einwohner, die sich selbst als „Bergfüchse“ bezeichnen. 1270 wurde das Dorf vom Landgraf Albrecht für 160 Mark Silber an Erfurt verkauft. Etwa 200 Jahre später ging es auch wieder gegen Geld an das Großherzogtum Sachsen Weimar, dem es bis 1918 unterstand. 1920 gehörte der Ort zu Kreis Weimar im Land Thüringen, ab 1952 in der DDR zum Bezirk Erfurt. Heute hat der Ort rund tausend Einwohner. Die verkehrsgünstige Lage zur Landeshauptstadt und zur Kreisstadt und auch die Nähe zur Autobahn sind neben der allgemein gepflegten Erscheinung des Ortsbildes immer wieder Anreiz zu Neuansiedlungen.

The first documented mention of the village at Rieth, directly north of the state capital Erfurt, was in 876 in an East Franconian document as "Nordhusa". The place name in use today has existed since 1483. The village is generally known as "Nurzen", which originated from the shortening of the correct place names that is common here in the area. The landmark of "Nurzen" is the Bonifatius church, which is also anchored in the village coat of arms. It was built on the 183 meter high church hill and can be seen far into the country. Napoleon, who passed through the area with his troops in 1806, is said to have called it the "Thuringian Lantern" for this reason.
