The state-approved Heilklimatische Luftkurort (climatic health resort) Neustadt/Harz is located in the heart of the Naturpark Südharz. Tourism and spas have been shaping the town since the 19th century. It has been a health resort since 1890 and is now also recognised as a curative climatic health resort. Outpatient treatments are available, especially for patients with chronic lung conditions. The ruins of Burg Hohnstein tower over the town. It was around 1120 when the Count Hohnstein's family, which used to be an influential noble family in Thuringia, had their ancestral castle built on a mountain ridge. A settlement developed at the foot of the Burgberg hill and was first officially recorded as a "Novenstadt" (New Town) in 1372. The small market town developed rapidly, so that the town was allowed to build a town hall in 1485 and to erect a Roland statue as a sign of its jurisdiction. The Roland statue still stands at the Ratskeller of Neustadt today - just like the Roland in neighbouring Nordhausen, the statue is also made of oak wood and dates from 1730, after the previous one burnt down. A ruin of the castle is still standing today and is a popular excursion destination with a castle inn, observation tower and other relics. Neustadt's network of paths offers good conditions for hikers and cyclists. For example, the quality hiking trail "Südharzer Dampflok Steig" (South Harz steam locomotive trail) runs right through the town, and not far away is the equally excellent karst hiking trail, the Volksbank Arena Harz with its extensive network of mountain bike trails, or the Harz cycle path. The Golfpark and the Waldschwimmbad in the forest are also perfect for getting some outdoor exercise. The Naturpark Südharz has a new exhibition in the information centre, which showcases the special features of the regional flora and fauna. Visitors can stay in hotels, guesthouses and holiday flats according to their wishes.
