Gräfenroda ist ein freundlicher, ins Tal der Wilden Gera gebetteter Ort. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung als Grevenrot ist auf eine Rodung gräflicher Waldgebiete zurückzuführen und reicht in das Jahr 1290 zurück.Der Ort mit ca. 3750 Einwohnern hat eine Längenausdehnung von 5 km in südwestnordöstliche Richtung zum Ortsteil Dörrberg. Seine zentrale Lage dem Nordrand des Thüringer Waldes, etwa 10 km von den Kammlagen und höchsten Bergen Thüringens entfernt, seine reizvolle waldreiche Umgebung, lassen Gräfenroda zu einem interessanten Ferienort werden.Idyllische Wege laden zu unvergesslichen Wanderungen in die Bergwelt und dichte Waldgebiete ein.Das Handwerk der Herstellung von Gartenzwergen hat seine Wiege in Gräfenroda, auch Glasbläserkunst wird traditionsreich fortgesetzt und weiter entwickelt.Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten des Ortes zählen die 1731 erbaute St.Laurentius Kirche mit ihren aus dem 16. Jahrhundert stammenden Flügelaltar, der Gedenkstein des Forstmeisters Winter, das 1685 erbaute Fachwerkhaus des Erbförsters Gundermann, die Ruine Alte Burg oder Raubschloss genannt, das Förstergrab des Forstmeisters Brückner, der Flössgraben als technisches Denkmal mit dem ausgebrannten Stein, der Bärenstein sowie die Talbrücke Wilde Gera, Deutschlands größten Autobahnbrücke.
