Es ist lohnenswert, sich ausreichend Zeit zu lassen, um die landschaftlichen und kulturellen Höhepunkte entlang des Ilmtal-Radweges genießen zu können. Die 125 km lange Tour beginnt im malerischen Thüringer Wald und führt dann durch reizvolle, sanfte Flussauen. Burgen, Schlösser, Kirchen, Museen, Waldgebiete und Parks werden ebenso gekreuzt wie kleine und große Städte – allen voran die Kulturstadt Weimar, ebenso wie die Goethe- und Universitätsstadt Ilmenau und die Zwei-Burgen-Stadt Kranichfeld. Sehenswert sind auch die Kurstädte Bad Berka und Bad Sulza. Wohl das bekannteste Argument für diesen Radweg ist das Wandeln auf Goethes Spuren, da dieser die Landschaft intensiv als Naturwissenschaftler und Dichter erkundet hat. In den vergangenen Jahren wurde der Ilmtal-Radweg zunehmend ausgebaut und beschildert. Er verläuft überwiegend auf Beton und Asphalt, wodurch eine Befahrung sehr angenehm ist. Bei einer von der Thüringer Tourismus GmbH in Auftrag gegebenen Studie wurde der Ilmtal-Radweg zum beliebtesten Radweg in Thüringen gewählt.

It is worthwhile to take enough time to enjoy the scenic and cultural highlights along the Ilmtal cycle route. The 125 km long route starts in the picturesque Thuringian Forest and then leads through charming, gentle river valleys. Castles, palaces, churches, museums, forests and parks are crossed as well as small and large towns – foremost the cultural city of Weimar, as well as the Goethe and university town of Ilmenau and the two-castle town of Kranichfeld. The spa towns Bad Berka and Bad Sulza are also worth seeing. Perhaps the best-known reason for this cycle route is following in Goethe’s footsteps, as he explored the landscape intensively as a natural scientist and poet.
