The Bauhaus Museum Weimar owns the world’s oldest Bauhaus collection, established by Walter Gropius in 1924. Situated in Weimar – the birthplace of the State Bauhaus – the museum focuses on the early Weimar phase of the most influential school of art and design of the 20th century. As a place of encounter, openness and discussion, the museum offers visitors contemporary perspectives on the ambivalent history and impact of modernism – from its nascency to the present day. It also explores the history of the Weimar Bauhaus and how it influenced social issues of modern living. The exhibition “The Bauhaus Comes from Weimar” introduces visitors to the themes and eventful years of the Bauhaus and sheds light on the artistic, creative and architectural roots of modernism around 1900. The newly built museum opened in Weimar’s new “Quarter of Modernism” in 2019, marking the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus. The museum’s modern architectural design comprises more than 2,200 m2 of exhibition space on three levels for the presentation of 13,000 collection pieces.

Das Bauhaus-Museum Weimar besitzt die weltweit älteste Bauhaus-Sammlung. Diese wurde bereits im Jahr 1924 von Walter Gropius angelegt. Am ursprünglichen Gründungsort des Bauhauses erinnert das Museum an die frühe Weimarer Phase der bedeutendsten Design- und Kunstschule des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Ort der Begegnung, Offenheit und Diskussion bietet das Museum zeitgenössische Perspektiven auf die ambivalente Wirkungsgeschichte der Moderne von ihren Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart hinein. Dabei wird die Geschichte des Weimarer Bauhauses mit den gesellschaftlichen Fragen der Lebensgestaltung verknüpft. Die Ausstellung „Das Bauhaus kommt aus Weimar“ führt thematisch durch die bewegten Jahre des Bauhauses und fragt nach den künstlerischen, gestalterischen und architektonischen Wurzeln in der Moderne um 1900. Der Neubau wurde eigens für das „Quartier der Moderne“ zum 100-jährigen Bauhaus-Jubiläum 2019 eröffnet. Für die Präsentation der 13.000 Objekte der Sammlung bietet die zeitgenössische Architektur mehr als 2.200 m² Ausstellungsfläche auf 3 Etagen.
