In Erfurt, which Luther compared to a "Schmalzgrube" nourishing the entire land of Thuringia, important roots of Martin Luther's theology and thus of the Reformation lie. From 1501 to 1505, Luther studied at the University of Erfurt and earned the title of Magister Artium of the Faculty of Philosophy. At his father's request, Luther then began studying law. But on July 2, 1505, after visiting his parents in Mansfeld, he was caught in a severe thunderstorm on the way back, was terrified for his life, and called out to Saint Anne, the mother of Mary: "Saint Anne, if you let me live, I will become a monk." Luther's entry into the Augustinian monastery on July 17, 1505 marks the beginning of the most consequential transformation in church history. The Luther Mile is part of the Luther Path that runs through Erfurt. On an individual tour, city and church history can be discovered at various Luther sites and places of the Reformation. Stations include the Augustinian Monastery, Collegium Maius, St. Michael's Church, or St. Mary's Cathedral. On his way to Worms, Luther was received at today's Kapellenplatz in Nohra by 40 professors of the University of Erfurt as well as highly respected citizens of Erfurt and escorted back to Erfurt. Luther is said to have spoken the following words at the chapel then in Nohra: "Die Gramme enstpringt in Nohre unterm chore." "Weimar is the foremost office, there the Elector is most comfortable and easiest, can hold Hus..." Thus Luther describes the then less than 2000-soul village on the Ilm. In September 1518, he met here with his friend, the Elector's private secretary Georg Spalatin. On October 18, 1522, Luther came to Weimar accompanied by several like-minded men to intervene in the Reformation debates. Already the next day he preached in the castle church. The city palace now houses the Cranach Gallery. Lucas Cranach the Elder, who died in Weimar in 1553, created numerous paintings and graphic portraits of Martin Luther and his wife Katharina von Bora. The interior of the late Gothic city church of St. Peter and Paul (Herder Church), where Luther preached, is dominated by the winged altar completed in 1555 by Lucas Cranach the Younger and Peter Roddelstedt. The monumental work also shows Martin Luther and next to him Lucas Cranach the Elder struck by the blood beam of Christ. The Franciscan Monastery, built in 1453, whose church Luther also preached in, now houses the FRANZ LISZT University of Music. A unique Bible collection, which also includes the magnificent Luther Bible from 1534, is located in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library.

Le Luthermeile fait partie du Lutherweg qui traverse Erfurt. Lors d'une visite individuelle, on peut découvrir l'histoire de la ville et de l'Église à différents lieux liés à Luther et à la Réforme. Les étapes incluent entre autres le monastère augustinien, le Collegium Maius, l'église Saint-Michel ou la cathédrale Sainte-Marie. Sur le chemin de Worms, Luther fut accueilli aujourd'hui sur la place de la chapelle à Nohra par 40 professeurs de l'université d'Erfurt ainsi que par des citoyens éminents d'Erfurt, qui l'accompagnèrent à Erfurt. Luther aurait prononcé à la chapelle de Nohra les mots suivants : "Die Gramme enstpringt in Nohre unterm chore." "Weimar est l'administration la plus distinguée, là réside le prince-électeur le plus confortablement et aisément, il peut soutenir Hus..." C'est ainsi que Luther décrit la localité d'alors de moins de 2000 habitants sur l'Ilm. En septembre 1518, il y rencontra son ami, le secrétaire secret du prince-électeur Georg Spalatin. Le 18 octobre 1522, Luther arriva à Weimar accompagné de plusieurs hommes partageant ses idées pour intervenir dans les débats réformateurs. Dès le lendemain, il prêcha dans l'église du château. Le château abrite aujourd'hui la galerie Cranach. Lucas Cranach l'Ancien, décédé en 1553 à Weimar, réalisa de nombreux portraits peints et graphiques de Martin Luther et de son épouse Katharina von Bora. L'intérieur de l'église paroissiale gothique tardive Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul (église Herder), où Luther prêcha, est dominé par le retable d'autel à ailes achevé en 1555 par Lucas Cranach le Jeune et Peter Roddelstedt. Cette œuvre monumentale montre aussi Martin Luther et, à ses côtés, Lucas Cranach l'Ancien frappé par le jet de sang du Christ. Le monastère franciscain construit en 1453, dans l'église duquel Luther prêcha également, abrite aujourd'hui la Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT. Une collection de bibles unique, comprenant la magnifique Bible de Luther de 1534, se trouve à la Bibliothèque Herzogin Anna Amalia.

Auf väterlichen Wunsch begann Luther danach das Studium der Rechtswissenschaften. Doch am 2. Juli 1505 wurde er nach einem Besuch seiner Eltern in Mansfeld auf dem Rückweg von einem schweren Gewitter überrascht, hatte Todesangst und rief zur Heiligen Anna, der Mutter Marias: "Heilige Anna, lässt Du mich leben, so will ich ein Mönch werden." Der Eintritt Luthers am 17. Juli 1505 in das Augustinerkloster markiert den Anfang der folgenreichsten Wandlung der Kirchengeschichte. Die Luthermeile ist Teil des Lutherweges, der durch Erfurt führt. Bei einem individuellen Rundgang können Stadt- und Kirchengeschichte an verschiedenen Lutherstätten und Reformationsorten entdeckt werden. Stationen sind u.a. das Augustinerkloster, Collegium Maius, die Michaeliskirche oder der Dom St. Marien. Auf seinem Weg nach Worms wurde Luther am heutigen Kapellenplatz in Nohra von 40 Professoren der Universität Erfurt sowie hoch angesehenen Erfurter Stadtleuten empfangen und nach Erfurt geleitet. Luther soll an der damaligen Kapelle in Nohra die folgenden Worte gesprochen haben: "Die Gramme enstpringt in Nohre unterm chore." "Weimar ist das fürnehmste Amt, da ist der Kurfürst am bequemsten und leichtlichsten, kann Hus halten..." So beschreibt Luther die seinerzeit nicht einmal 2000 Seelen zählende Ortschaft an der Ilm. Im September 1518 traf er sich hier mit seinem Freund, dem kurfürstlichen Geheimsekretär Georg Spalatin. Am 18. Oktober 1522 kam Luther in Begleitung mehrerer gleichgesinnter Männern nach Weimar, um in die reformatorischen Debatten einzugreifen. Bereits am nächsten Tag predigte er in der Schlosskirche. Das Stadtschloss beherbergt heute die Cranach-Galerie. Der 1553 in Weimar verstorbene Lucas Cranach der Ältere fertigte zahlreiche Gemälde- und Grafikporträts von Martin Luther und seiner Frau Katharina von Bora. Das Innere der spätgotischen Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul (Herderkirche), in der Luther predigte, dominiert der von Lucas Cranach d.J. und Peter Roddelstedt 1555 vollendete Flügelaltar.  Das monumentale Werk zeigt auch Martin Luther und neben ihm stehend den vom Blutstrahl Christi getroffenen Lucas Cranach d.Ä. Das 1453 erbaute Franziskanerkloster, in dessen Kirche Luther ebenfalls predigte, beherbergt heute die Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT. Eine einzigartige Bibelsammlung, zu der auch die prachtvolle Lutherbibel aus dem Jahr 1534 gehört, befindet sich in der Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.
