Eine begehbare Stadtmauer, Kirchen, das Rathaus, attraktive Bürgerhäuser und bedeutende Höfe gehören zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der im Mittelalter nach Erfurt bedeutendsten Stadt Thüringens. Im Bauernkrieg war die Stadt das Thüringer Zentrum. Der zu jener Zeit als Prediger tätige einstige Weggefährte Luthers, der radikale Theologe Thomas Müntzer, war geistiger Anführer der Aufständischen. Luther weilte persönlich nie in der einstmals Freien Reichsstadt. Dass Mühlhausen dennoch in der Zeit der Reformation und des Deutschen Bauernkrieges eine wichtige Rolle spielte, ist dem Wirken Thomas Müntzers geschuldet. Im 15. Jahrhundert wird die Kritik gegen die Missstände in der Kirche lauter. Sie mischt sich mit einer Endzeitstimmung, die nicht zuletzt durch die Pestepedemien in Europa ausgelöst wird. Gleichzeitig verändert sich die Wirtschaft. Der Handel floriert, Bauern und Tagelöhner hingegen verarmen. Thomas Müntzer bringt diese Situation und das aktuelle Lebensgefühl auf den Punkt und radikalisiert es: Er mischt Elemente der mittelalterlichen Mystik mit solchen der Apokalypse und formt daraus seine Theologie der Revolution. Die Aufstände wertet er als Beginn des göttlichen Gerichts. Ausbeuter dürfen mit dem Schwert gerichtet werden. Für seine Rolle im Bauernkrieg entscheidend ist, dass Thomas Müntzer nicht nur eine Reformierung der Kirche anstrebt, sondern eine Umwälzung der politischen Verhältnisse. Und er hält auch Gewalt für legitim. Martin Luther hingegen ruft zum Gehorsam gegen die Obrigkeit auf. Als dies ohne Wirkung bleibt, empfiehlt er ein brutales Vorgehen gegen die Aufständischen: "... man soll sie zerschmeißen, würgen, stechen, heimlich und öffentlich, wer da kann, wie man einen tollen Hund erschlagen muss." Thomas Müntzer nennt er den Teufel von Allstedt. Aus dem einstigen Weggefährten Luthers ist der ungeliebte Bruder geworden. Ganz im Zeichen von Martin Luthers erbittertem Widersacher Thomas Müntzer steht die Dauerausstellung der Mühlhäuser Museen. Besonderes Prunkstück ist eine originalgetreue Nachbildung des reich verzierten Schwertes, das Thomas Müntzer in der blutigen Schlacht am 15. Mai 1525 bei Bad Frankenhausen getragen haben soll. Nach der verlustreichen Niederlage der Aufständischen war der unbequeme Prediger schließlich gefangen genommen, gefoltert und später durch einen Scharfrichter enthauptet worden. Von Mühlhausen kommend führt der Lutherweg nach Oberdorla. Sehenswert hier ist die Stiftskirche Sankt Peter und Paul. Am Portal der romanischen Kirche befinden sich die beiden, bereits stark verwitterten, aber sehr eindrucksvollen Apostel-Darstellungen. Die nächsten Stationen sind die Orte Langula, Kammerforst und Craula. Von hier aus lohnt sich ein Abstecher zum Baumkronenpfad und zur Wurzelhöhle am Nationalparkzentrum Thiemsburg im UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe Nationalpark Hainich.

A walkable city wall, churches, the town hall, attractive townhouses, and significant courtyards are among the sights of the city that was the most important in Thuringia after Erfurt in the Middle Ages. During the Peasants' War, the city was the center of Thuringia. The radical theologian Thomas Müntzer, who was a preacher at that time and a former companion of Luther, was the intellectual leader of the insurgents. Luther personally never stayed in the once Free Imperial City. Nevertheless, Mühlhausen played an important role during the Reformation and the German Peasants' War due to the work of Thomas Müntzer. In the 15th century, criticism against the grievances in the church grew louder. It mingled with an apocalyptic mood, triggered not least by the plague epidemics in Europe. At the same time, the economy changed. Trade flourished, but peasants and day laborers became impoverished. Thomas Müntzer pinpointed this situation and the current mood of life and radicalized it: he mixed elements of medieval mysticism with those of the apocalypse and shaped his theology of revolution from it. He interpreted the uprisings as the beginning of divine judgment. Exploiters were to be judged with the sword. Crucial for his role in the Peasants' War is that Thomas Müntzer not only sought a reform of the church but a revolution of political conditions. And he also considered violence legitimate. Martin Luther, on the other hand, called for obedience to the authorities. When this had no effect, he recommended a brutal approach against the insurgents: "... one should smash them, strangle them, stab them, secretly and openly, whoever can, as one must kill a mad dog." He called Thomas Müntzer the devil of Allstedt. The former fellow traveler of Luther had become the disliked brother. The permanent exhibition at the Mühlhausen museums is entirely dedicated to Martin Luther's bitter opponent Thomas Müntzer. A special highlight is a faithful replica of the richly decorated sword that Thomas Müntzer is said to have carried in the bloody battle on May 15, 1525, near Bad Frankenhausen. After the heavy defeat of the insurgents, the troublesome preacher was finally captured, tortured, and later beheaded by an executioner. Starting from Mühlhausen, the Lutherweg leads to Oberdorla. Worth seeing here is the collegiate church of Saint Peter and Paul. At the portal of the Romanesque church are two already heavily weathered but very impressive depictions of apostles. The next stations are the places Langula, Kammerforst, and Craula. From here, a detour to the treetop path and the root cave at the National Park Center Thiemsburg in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Hainich National Park is worthwhile.

Une muraille de ville praticable, des églises, l'hôtel de ville, des maisons bourgeoises attrayantes et des cours importantes font partie des sites incontournables de la ville la plus importante de Thuringe après Erfurt au Moyen Âge. Lors de la guerre des paysans, la ville était le centre de la Thuringe. À cette époque, Thomas Müntzer, ancien compagnon de Luther et prédicateur radical, était le leader spirituel des insurgés. Luther ne s'est personnellement jamais rendu dans l'ancienne ville impériale libre. Le fait que Mühlhausen ait néanmoins joué un rôle important pendant la Réforme et la guerre allemande des paysans est dû à l'action de Thomas Müntzer. Au XVe siècle, la critique des abus dans l'église devient plus forte. Elle s'entremêle avec une ambiance apocalyptique déclenchée notamment par les épidémies de peste en Europe. En même temps, l'économie change. Le commerce prospère, tandis que les paysans et les journaliers s'appauvrissent. Thomas Müntzer exprime cette situation et ce sentiment de vie actuel de manière radicale : il mélange des éléments de la mystique médiévale avec ceux de l'apocalypse et forme ainsi sa théologie de la révolution. Il considère les révoltes comme le début du jugement divin. Les exploiteurs peuvent être jugés à l'épée. Pour son rôle dans la guerre des paysans, il est décisif que Thomas Müntzer ne cherche pas seulement une réforme de l'église, mais un renversement des rapports politiques. Et il considère aussi la violence comme légitime. Martin Luther, par contre, appelle à l'obéissance envers l'autorité. Lorsque cela ne produit aucun effet, il recommande une répression brutale contre les insurgés : « ... on doit les casser, les étrangler, les poignarder, en secret et en public, comme on doit écraser un chien fou. » Il appelle Thomas Müntzer le diable d'Allstedt. L'ancien compagnon de Luther est devenu son frère indésirable. La présentation permanente des musées de Mühlhausen est entièrement consacrée à l'adversaire acharné de Martin Luther, Thomas Müntzer. La pièce maîtresse est une reproduction fidèle de l'épée richement décorée que Thomas Müntzer aurait portée lors de la bataille sanglante du 15 mai 1525 près de Bad Frankenhausen. Après la défaite sanglante des insurgés, le prédicateur gênant fut finalement capturé, torturé et plus tard décapité par un bourreau. En partant de Mühlhausen, le chemin de Luther mène à Oberdorla. L'église collégiale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul vaut une visite. Au portail de l'église romane se trouvent les deux représentations très impressionnantes, bien que fortement usées, des apôtres. Les étapes suivantes sont les localités de Langula, Kammerforst et Craula. Depuis là, une excursion vers le parcours dans la cime des arbres et la grotte racinaire du centre du parc national Thiemsburg dans le parc national de Hainich, site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, est recommandée.
