With its 18 districts, the unified municipality of Probstzella lies idyllically nestled between the three nature parks of the Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale, Franconian Forest and Thuringian Forest. The Loquitz forms a particularly narrow valley here with green meadows and breathtaking views from the surrounding mountains of the low mountain range. The course of the river is followed by the Loquitz cycle path, the federal highway 85 and the railway line between Nuremberg and Leipzig, which makes the community easily accessible for short trips and holidaymakers. A multitude of tourist offers in the region invite you to stay. Along the Beer and Castle Road, the Slate Road and the Porcelain Road you will find typical regional features such as the technical monument at the slate mine in Lehesten, the Slate Museum in Ludwigsstadt, the porcelain manufactories in Tettau and Gräfenthal, Lauenstein Castle and the Nature Park Information Centre in Probstzella as well as surprises. In the slate-roofed idyll of Probstzella, the austere building forms of the Haus des Volkes in the centre of the village seem almost unreal. The towering building complex with hotel, café and restaurant was built by the industrial pioneer Franz Itting in 1927 and is the largest architectural monument of the Bauhaus period in Thuringia. The region around Probstzella was particularly shaped by its location in the former border area of the GDR. The border station in Probstzella, a museum-like observation tower on the Hopfberg and the "Green Belt" bear witness to this history. Those who are interested can learn more about it during a guided hike and a film screening (contact via tourist information or Haus des Volkes). For hikers there are a variety of beautiful hiking routes.
