Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung im Jahre 860 nennt den Ort "Cemoforte" als Besitz des Klosters Fulda. 1360 erwarb das Adelsgeschlecht "Seebach" das Kammerforster Gut, welches in Ober- und Untergut aufgeteilt wird.Die Nationalparkgemeinde liegt am Ostrand des Hainichs und an der Nordgrenze des Nationalparks. Der von Fachwerkhäusern geprägte Ortskern mit seinem Dorfanger, seiner Kirche und die Nationalparkinformation und -ausstellung im historischen Obergut bieten einen günstigen Ausgangspunkt für viele Aktivitäten. Von Kammerforst aus finden Sie Wanderrouten in den Hainich. Der Ort wird gern als Übernachtungs-Zwischenstation für Rennstiegwanderungen genutzt. In dem freundlichen Ort mit ca. 1000 Einwohnern, werden traditionelle Pfingst-, Flurweihe- und Maienfeste gefeiert. Neben Blasmusik- und Waldfest hat den Ort das jährliche stattfindende Volksmusikfest bekannt gemacht, bei dem sich Stars der Schlager- und Volksmusikszene, wie Andy Borg, Heino, Geschwister Hoffmann, Stefanie Hertel und Sefan Mros oft ein Stelldichein geben.
