Home advantage – there hasn't been this much winter for a long time. 😉 Those who want to complete the hike have various entry points. The large parking lot at the forest swimming pool is ideal, or like me in Hinterburg at the playground/Amselweg. The tour combines beautiful field and forest sections. Right at the beginning, upon arriving at the vineyard "Mädchenberg," there is a great panoramic view over the Thuringian Basin, all the way to the Inselsberg. Further on, you walk along the Kreuzspende to Ulrich's Rest, with its often praised view. From a local history perspective, the surrounding area here is very interesting. Old field names like Kapellenberg, Pfarrgarten, Mönchsacker, Pfafftal, and Kreuzspende, for example, point to a time around the beginning of the 8th century. Christianization began in Thuringia, and it was the Kilian monks who probably built the first small church on the Kapellenberg. __________ KILIAN CHURCH During the time of Christianization, at the beginning of the 8th century, there was likely a small monk's chapel on Kapellenberg. Field names like Klösterchen, Mönchsgarten, Mönchsacker, and Mönchsborn indicate this. In the immediate vicinity of today's cemetery stood the oldest church of Rastenberg, the Kilian Church, which had fallen into disrepair around 1550. On Kilian's Day, people danced under the linden trees on the hill – hence the name Dance Place to this day. This is the origin of today's Rastenberg Cherry Festival. ___________ KREUZSPENDE When the Kilian Church was built, inhabitants of the surrounding villages and farms from the Finne helped. Men skilled in timber work put all their expertise into building the church. Only the finest trunks from the forest were used for construction; the lesser ones were used for building the protective fence. The brothers of the monastery distributed, with friendly and grateful words, small consecrated crosses as a return gift to the helpers. The place where this happened has since been called Kreuzspende. This can be read in the small local novel of Pastor Alfred Schreckenbach "The Last Monk of Rastenberg." ___________ Towards the railway embankment of the former shaft railway lies the sled hill on the left side, once upon a time… ____________ SHAFT RAILWAY The connecting railway between Rastenberg and the guild (potash shaft Rastenberg) was used for transporting the extracted potash salt. From Rastenberg, it continued on to Weimar. In Weimar, traces from this time and the railway line can still be found today; there is a reference to the "Rastenberg Station." _________ The tour goes through the deep valley, over the Fox Avenue to the Tauhardt sports field, where the traditional Finne run starts every year. The next station is the former shaft; from here, it goes down the donkey path into the mill valley where the loop closes.
